Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is Indonesia's largest airport and a major aviation hub in Southeast Asia, located about 20 km northwest of central Jakarta in Tangerang, West Java. Named after Indonesia's first President and Vice-President, Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta, it is commonly known as Soetta or Cengkareng. The airport is the primary hub for Garuda Indonesia and Citilink, connecting Jakarta to destinations across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and beyond.
Jakarta is served by two airports. CGK is the main gateway for international and domestic flights. Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport (HLP), closer to the city, handles some domestic routes plus charter, private, and VIP flights. CGK handles the vast majority of commercial air traffic.
CGK has three active terminals. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights across wings A, B, and C. Terminal 2 is a low-cost carrier terminal with sections D, E, and F. Terminal 3, opened in 2016, is the newest and serves international and full-service carriers, functioning as the main hub for Garuda Indonesia. All three are connected by a free SkyTrain and landside shuttle bus. A planned Terminal 4 was officially cancelled in November 2024.
Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are not connected airside. Passengers transferring between them must exit the transit area and use the free SkyTrain or landside shuttle, a journey of around 5 to 10 minutes. Connecting passengers across different terminals should allow at least 60 to 90 minutes for the transfer and re-security process.
CGK has three runways. The two main parallel runways are 07R/25L at 3,660 metres and 07L/25R at 3,600 metres. A third runway, 06/24 at 3,000 metres, opened in August 2019. Together they allow CGK to handle up to 81 movements per hour, placing it among the most operationally intensive airports in Southeast Asia.
Indian passport holders can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Here is what Indian travellers need to know:
