Ethiopian Airlines is the flag carrier of Ethiopia and is headquartered at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. It is often referred to as just, Ethiopian.

Ethiopian Airlines was established on 21st December 1945. On 8th April, 1946, the aviation company commenced operations with its first scheduled flight to Cairo via Asmara in a Douglas C-47 Skytrain. The airline was set up as Ethiopian Airlines Inc. The deal was finalized through a joint venture with an American airline, Trans World Airlines (TWA).  It is now fully owned by the Government of Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Air has won several awards; some of the notable ones are as follows:

  • On 17th July2012, it was awarded with the Transformation Award 2012 by Planet Africa Network in Toronto
  • On 30th April 2012, it received Airline Reliability Performance Award from the Bombardier Aerospace
  • On 24th February 2011, it received the African Cargo Airline of the Year Award at the Air Cargo Africa 2011 Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya

The airline offers services to various destinations within Africa and other countries across the world. The current strength of the fleet, which includes owned as well as leased aircraft, stands at 54. It operates the youngest fleet in Africa.
