'Believed to be the battleground for the Kalinga War, Dhauli Giri hills are located on the banks of the River Daya. Masses of rocks still have King Ashoka’s words etched on them, making this a fascinating sight. An important place for Buddhists, there is a Peace Pagoda or Shanti Temple in the vicinity as well. A few other temples such as the Bhaskareshwar and Shiva temples are also nearby attractions. History tells us that Ashoka became a propagator of peace after the bloodshed during the war of Kalinga, and so built a number of stupas and pillars around this area. '
