[Rated 2.5 stars] As a longtime Bonvoy Elite and a former Starwood loyalist I have seen how the W concept has evolved from the early 2000s starting from Barry Sternlicht's vision to what we have going these days as modified versions of that vision. It is suffice to say that most W hotels these days, at least the ones built post their merger with Marriott, are all about weirdness, funkiness, loudness, hype and much less about function, comfort and guest satisfaction. The brand urgently needed a reboot but it seemed to me they simply don't care as long as they were able to attract their crowd. Our Malaysia trip was planned around the 10th birthday of our twins and one of the requests I had from them was of a hotel with the Twin Towers view. Well, W KL certainly satisfied this requirement and so without much second thought I booked for a Twin Towers view Spectacular room using my Bonvoy points. Few days before our arrival, I emailed their GM Volker Burth explaining our trip and requesting for an upgrade. He replied, effectively saying that they don't offer complimentary upgrades to lowly Gold Elites like us and that this must be purchased. However, Gold Elites were eligible for complimentary breakfasts and access to free drinks and canapes at their pool bar in the evening. We thought this to be quite a good deal given that most of the time we did not plan to be at the hotel anyway given our packed schedule. Nevertheless, the day before our check-in at W KL we were already in the city at The Banyan Tree and I received a call from Michelle Lee of the front office (or was it the "Welcome Team"?) when we were doing our lunch. She called back again a bit later, noted down our kids names and said that an early check-in instead of the regular 3 PM would be possible. We were actually in no hurry to do an early check-in at W, since firstly we were rather enjoying our time at the Banyan but also because we had a scheduled 1 PM tour of the Twin Towers observation deck. Checking-in after the tour made sense. Instead, we arrived at W at around 11 AM and took the lift past their parking levels to the check-in lounge, I mean "The Living Room". Well, our room was not there yet and instead Michelle asked us to go check out the pool. So we did and some orange-ish mocktail was served as the welcome drink. After waiting for almost 40 minutes we got a bit impatient and went down to see the status of our room readiness. It was far from ready and some last minute "arrangements" were happening. In fact we were scared that we would miss our slot at the KLCC tower, although that was simply a few minutes away. After all the hassle and waiting we finally got the room keys at 12:15 PM and I was actually told "your upgraded room is ready!". I guess this was part of the standard W lingo even if the fact was something else. The rooms were actually accessible from a second bank of lifts located inside and no one was there to see us to the room. With the early check-in routine finally out of our way we checked into our Twin Tower View room (#2213). The hotel occupied the lower 23 floors of the building above the car park and so it was almost as high as it got. Our Spectacular Room had two Queen sized beds (as requested) and these took up a significant portion of the 450 odd square feet space, so much so that four of us wished we had a little bit more space for ourselves. On the left of the entrance we had a walk-in closet that was quite narrow which also had a clothes rail blocking most of the passage. Past this as you walked in the W design bits started to reveal: mirrors everywhere, frosted or not, including the headboards which had some pixellated frosted glass artwork in yellow and in, yes you guessed it, purple! How could this be a W room if not purple/pink coloured glasses everywhere? But, I would say the specific design at W KL had quite a restrained use of these colours. As the beds took up all the space, their famed pink chaise lounge had disappeared from our room and instead we had two uncomfortable, hard chairs and a coffee table with our welcome goodies. W hotels usually go overboard with such stuff and in this case we were also celebrating birthdays. Among other things there was a single plastic skateboard. We never understood the purpose and especially since there were two kids with us. There were a few balloons here and there but this still didn't explain why it took so long for them to prepare the room. There was a bar counter of sort which may be their version of a work desk while the Nespresso machine was hidden behind a bright pink frosted glass cabinet. There were lot of funky lighting controls but most of it was just funky and not usable. Similarly, the beds were spacious but not very comfortable for some reason. For a luxury room, their 4-fixture bathroom was rather cramped for space with a small triangular basin, a smallish shower room where the floor was shaking, a standard toilet at the end and a built-in bath tub. There were MOMO amenities but these were in slightly larger plastic bottles with a price tag attached in case you wanted to take them! The bathroom door won't even properly shut and with all the mirrors and glasses everywhere you would be slightly disconcerted while inside the bathroom when travelling as a family. Anyway, the tour de force of the room design was the spectacular view of the KLCC twin towers which was so in front and so close that you would feel like staring at a giant and the hotel was perennially living under its shadow. Our kids were definitely super happy about this aspect of the room. The F&B of the property was quite average, again for a luxury property that described itself as the most happening place of the Golden Triangle district. The breakfast served at Flock might look a lot but beyond the noddle bar and the congee station we didn't find anything much interesting. The a-la-carte options were rather limited while SE Asia luxury hotels usually have a much higher standard of breakfast. There was no Prosecco either! Ditto, the cocktail hours at the Wet Deck in the evening. The available cocktails were okay but the complimentary bar nibbles on both days were rather meh. The Woo Bar was occupied with Ramadan feasts. Regarding the other dining venues, one night we went to Yen at around 9:30 PM and we were simply refused a seat saying the kitchen was closed. On the other night as we went to check out the a-la-carte options at Flock we were told there were no such options and that only a buffet existed. Even that was closed and this was at 10 PM! No one, including our friendly host Michelle, had informed us about such odd/strict timings or explained what we needed to do to get in to the dining venues, even if we were hotel guests. W hotels have a famed Whatever, Whenever service line which simply went missing at this property. House keeping was again quite ordinary. Simple requests like for a pair of scissors were denied because of safety concerns! We had a train to catch in the late morning of our check-out day and so we checked out well in advance of our regular check-out time. Michelle herself did the check-out but no questions were asked at all about the stay. I guess she knew the answer. I think, generally speaking, I'm done with W's anywhere and these are definitely not in sync with my expectations of a luxury hotel property anymore, especially as I grow older.

Staff was welcoming at the welcome desk. Had some mishap with the card machine but they somehow managed to make the situation from an inconvenience to a funny experience. View of KLCC from the room was astounding too. Anniversary decoration was also cute with hand written cards and made us feel the effort the talents made to make our anniversary special
