Heritage hotel, top hospitality, amazing views

We visited the property to celebrate our wedding anniversary and stayed for 2 nights. Top of the class hospitality as one can expect from Oberoi hotels. The property is on the quieter side of Shimla, giving amazing views of the valley for most of the rooms - would advise to confirm with hotel about city vs valley views before booking, if priority. We planned on visiting Shimla in the day, so view wasn't a priority for us.

Overall experience was good but fell short on the expectations set by hearing from friends about Oberoi hotels. Staff was courteous but it appeared that they were overloaded. So made mistakes in in-room dining orders.

Great location, wonderful service. The staff are doing great work to take care of the guests and the legendary property. The food, portion size and quality did not work out for me in relation to the relatively high price paid for each dish. Standard dishes like Paneer Tikka which is supposed to be flavorful along with green peppers and onions char grilled in the tandoor were missing. Neither did the dish have any flavor at all; it was like chewing into a piece of red-colored paneer. Similarly, a Paneer Kathi Roll was dumped with an excess of mustard sauce which made it taste like biting into a roll filled with chemical. Spoke with the Executive Chef, Saurabh Taneja. He politely gave a reason for why each dish tasted the way it did. I too, politely accepted it as my mistake of ordering food in the Hotel :) Other items ordered at lunch were Amritsari Aloo Gobhi and Dal Tadka. The Amritsar in the Aloo Gobhi was missing; it, along with the Dal was OK and nothing great to write about. The food didn’t do justice to the Oberoi Brand and the premium it commands overall. I’d give The Oberoi Cecil a pass next time and go elsewhere; can’t go walking miles for my kinda (simple, vegetarian) food in a Hill Station with a wife and kid in tow. I need my food to be on point.

The Oberoi’s quality of services and personal touch speak for themselves. Excellent location, walking distance from the Mall Road, Best services and mouthwatering food. Manav, the General Manager, an excellent host, proactive and always eager to help- even off duty hours. Highly recommended.

All things you read are true. It’s an excellent hotel with service that’s incomparable especially if you’re from Europe. In room check in was excellent as it meant there was no sitting in the lobby. They gave our little one a little gift which made her day upon entry. The food is great, at breakfast they will make you anything on or off the menu, in room dining is very well managed, presented and tasty. There is a kids play area which was really useful for us. Make sure to use the turndown service, lovely way to end the night and a very good pillow menu. All in all a great stay. A few tips for those with kids: The front of the hotel can get loud, single glazed windows and it’s busy until 10pm ish. We used a white noise machine to avoid the disturbance. The swimming pool is only one depth so if you have toddlers who can’t swim then they do provide arm bands. We would definitely stay again. Thank you all very much
