The hotel is close to the main train station and within walking distance of the city center. The room and bathroom are old, but everything was clean and I slept well. The breakfast was reasonable for the price of the room. Directly from the hotel you get a good price and value for money.

We stayed here for two nights while visiting Dusseldorf. The hotel is located very near to most transport links, especially the central train station and there is a tram stop outside to get around the city. The staff were very friendly, no issues there. The hotel itself is quite old but it's a nice change having an actual key to your room and the beds were comfortable and the room clean. The shower could probably use an upgrade but it was still usable. The only thing I wasn't expecting was the noise from outside, obviously not the hotels fault but bare this in mind if you're the type of person who sleeps with the window open, pretty relentless thought the night, at least on our side of the building. The included breakfast was great, offering a mostly continental choice with a few hot items, all good. Overall recommended, reasonable price and good standard of rooms.

These days it's easy to con people. Give somebody a square plate in a restaurant and they'll pay extra, throw a wrapped chocolate on the bed in the room, wow! You'll justify those extortionate prices you charge; it goes on and on, and people fall for it every time, much to the delight of hoteliers. But not all hotels are corporate hell holes full of suits and people you simply don't want to meet over breakfast. Not all hotels are grey and lifeless, but believe me, these days those that don't conform are few and far between as growing obsessions for square and rectangular plates, the colour grey and those awful little shops that sell over-priced hoodies and tourist tat, proliferate. No, it doesn't have to be this way. Take the Novum Madison hotel in Dusseldorf, it still has room keys for heaven's sake. Room keys! None of the little plastic cards that never work properly. The Novum Madison, then, is my kind of hotel because it's normal and there are no suits, and you don't have to worry about coming down to breakfast and having to engage in conversation you'd rather not have at such an ungodly hour. In short, it's wonderful. The rooms are normal, they're not ultra-decorated, they're just hotel rooms. Room 304, right next door to the elevator, but did I hear any noise? Nothing. And what about the beds? There were two singles, made of pine, I slept in one and borrowed the pillows from the other, there was a pine wardrobe, an empty fridge, a desk, nothing special, just a desk, a TV that worked, a decent bathroom with an easy-to-use shower, again, nothing extraordinary, no granite surfaces, no fancy toiletries, no bidet, just normal, just how I like it. Breakfast, the big decider in my book, was perfect. Everything was there that you might need, a reasonably pleasant environment. Again, perfect. No restaurant but who wants one when there's a whole city out there? The Novum Madison is close to the station, and some might say not a great area, lots of kebab shops and the odd sex shop in the vicinity, but it's fine, there's no danger, it's all fine in my experience and again, I love it. I love Dusseldorf. I had dinner out in a very nice Italian restaurant that I think I've written about before and then I took a walk to the old town to walk off the calories after a very tasty tiramisu. Listen, I slept okay, I watched a bit of TV, and I really can't ask for more. And guess how much I paid for two nights? One hundred and thirty-seven Euros. It was great, it was more than great and when I got down to the front desk and said how much I loved the room keys the woman behind the counter sort of sighed and said key cards can be pre-programmed, there's no problems with lost keys and so forth. I wasn't buying it. I told her I loved the Novum Madison because it had principles, it was sticking to its guns and guess what? The other guests were normal people, normal everyday people, no swish suits and Samonsite luggage, no airline pilots, no CEOs, just a friendly, honest hotel bang in the centre of a great German city. And, last but not least, they clean your room every morning, change the bedclothes, none of that ‘we won’t be cleaning your room as we want to save the planet’. I'll be back. The last time I was at the Madison was June 2019 and this was four years later. Nothing has changed and I'm so glad it hasn't. Keep up the good work, guys. And please, don't get rid of the room keys.

How many times have you seen a receptionist wish a customer a Happy Birthday when she noticed their DOB 4 days beforehand. Fantastic place. Nice a Central Location, Railway Station and Tram line nearby. No frills and no hassle.

After adding an extra night on our trip we decided to stay in Düsseldorf due to Cologne being extremely expensive due to to the Comic con. We chose the Novum because of its location which was only a few minutes walk from the HBF. We arrived quite late owing to an earlier train having been cancelled. The Gentleman on reception was friendly and checkin quick. However, when I got to the room I saw it was a double and not the Triple I had booked. I went down to reception where the Gentleman checked and said yes he could see I’d booked a Triple but there had been a mistake and there weren’t any free triples he could move us. Luckily I guess, there were only two of us travelling and had we had a 3rd someone would have been sleeping in the chair. The Gentleman was very apologetic and gave us a free breakfast. The room itself was a pretty standard size for a double. The shower was a bath shower and the water power was very good. All in all a pretty average hotel which would have been fine for one night had we got the room we booked. The breakfast was decent and did go some way to making up for the issue with the room.
