I stayed here last week for 6 days. And that was my third visit here. This is one of the best place if you are looking for a cheap and safe place. The whole premises and toilets are always kept clean. However the only issue i had this time is that, i called them two days prior my visit and asked for a single room and also checked with them if i'll need to book online for which they said not necessary and i can do it once i reach. But, to my surprise when i reached no information has been given to others or any room has been blocked for me. I happened to stay in dormitory. Not a big deal staying in dorm but i prefer staying alone. Otherwise everything was fine during the stay.

I felt like this hostel was very authentic, especially as it was mostly Indians staying there. The location was perfect for me and the staff were as helpful as I needed them to be, only downside is how incredibly hard the mattresses are but maybe that’s part of the authenticity. But it’s also very cheep for what you get

As a solo woman traveller, artist, and activist for women's rights, I've had many uncomfortable experiences while on the road. Travelling alone can be daunting, especially when in an unfamiliar place. New Vasantashram is a gem in the heart of South Mumbai. Affordable and safe, I felt a genuine sense of care from the guest house's management and staff. I had come to Mumbai to paint a mural with a Koli women. The hotel's owner and staff, who are great art lovers, as you will see from the incredible collection of classical artwork from around the country that adorns the walls of the guesthouse, were incredibly supportive of my work. I am left with nothing but gratitude in my heart and look forward to staying at New Vasantashram every time I visit Mumbai. X

We found New Vasantashram to be a good little hostel that was in a great location and at a very affordable price. Rooms were basic and there were Indian squat toilets, which we were expecting from the reviews. The hostel had a nice charm to it and I loved the decor and dorms however, on both mornings we were woken by the noise of the staff, and guests, and unfortunately, it ruined our stay here. From 6.30am the staff were making a racket cleaning and guests weren't considerate of others. I stayed in a 4 bedroom for ladies but there was a private room behind, separated by a false wall with a gap at the top meaning I could hear everything going on in their room (talking, playing music and videos) which began early in the morning and didn't stop until late at night. The staff began moving beds around in the male room at 6.30am by pulling them across the floor and waking up my boyfriend. Other than the noise and disruption level, we had a good stay here. It was basic and cheap, ideal for backpackers. Would recommend but expect to be woken up early.

I attended a very interesting cultural talk on Bhendi Bazaar by a writer and academic at The New Vasantashram a year ago, which was when I first discovered it. I was very surprised to find such an affordable lodging and boarding house in a busy and popular place like South Mumbai. The owner, Ms Sujata Pilinja Rao, has given it a minimal but tasteful makeover and it really adds to the charm of this space comprising of the third and fourth floors of the century old Narasinh Mansion, that is walking distance from the VT station and a few steps away from Crawford Market. I finally got a chance to stay there last month for two nights in the girls dormitory, and found it to be both convenient and safe. The staff was very co-operative and helpful. While the entrance passage of the building and the stairs may come across as a little shabby and decrepit, the lodge itself is very clean and tidy. If you are looking for a simple, no frills place to stay at as you explore the city of Mumbai, New Vasant Ashram Lodge is an option worth considering.
