We were starting to tire after walking around the sites on our first afternoon in Tashkent and thought there would be a cafeteria where we could have a drink and snack. It’s fascinating to go into these huge communist built edifices though I wouldn’t want to stay in one! Surely the facilities would have been upgraded since Soviet times? The foyer is cavernous and dated but the cafe was clearly signposted. It was very basic with hard seats. A shop selling essentials and SIM cards was also in the space but it’s more like a kiosk. Approaching the counter we could see that there was a poor selection of film wrapped pastries, unattractive cakes and packets of crisps so we didn’t order anything to eat. Enquiring about drinks we were told that there was no milk for tea so we just bought a fizzy drink from the chiller. Disappointing. There are toilets, which is handy because we didn’t see any public toilets all afternoon. We then asked at reception if they could call a taxi for us to return to our own hotel. The girl couldn’t have been more helpful and used her own phone to get us a car on YandexGo which pulled up within a couple of minutes.

I read the reviews so I wasn't expecting a great experience. $55AUD a night and the associated history - I'll give it a go. Amazing building - tacky at night with the advertising (see photo) but must pull in much needed income. The staff don't smile - maybe they are not happy. Initially impressed with my room, it's spacious with a single bed and very clean. Yes it's dated - I knew that before I booked. The air-conditioner looks like the original unit, it can't cool the room. I'm facing away from the road - so I get the morning sun. By 08:00 the room is uncomfortable. I could hear road noise last night but not a problem. The breakfast was the best I have had in Uzbekistan. The fact the air-conditioner does not cool the room, makes this a deal breaker in hot weather - this is a winter hotel. I told reception the air-conditioner doesn't work - a look of surprise, "Oh" Avoid in hot weather.

Pros: good location, historical building. Cons: Very "tired" hotel, inside with the design of the 90s. Requires repair and renovation. Old carpeting causes coughing. The bed is wobbly, the mattress is not comfortable, looks like a piece of loose paralon. Breakfast is meager and tasteless, kozinaki smells musty, coffee though in coffee pots, but brewed from bags, omelet cold, and some dirty onions not in theme. On the balcony not cleaned cigarette butts, and kettle water from past guests.

Initially we were hesitant to book this hotel after reading few negative comments. So, we booked it for 1 night stay only. And we did the right thing! The hotel is beautiful. It has a heritage charm in it. Staff is polite. While checkout, a hearty luchbox was given as we had to leave early. Location is great! Just opposite Amir Temur square. Many eateries nearby too. Not sure if it will be a good idea to book for a long stay. But, it is a good option for a short stay to feel Soviet vibe.
