In the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, Sonmarg is a hill station that sits cozily at an altitude of 2730 meters. Tucked in the valley of Sirbal mountain which is a part of the Himalayan range, Sonmarg is a picture postcard landscape that combines alpine meadows (which bloom in the summer), awesome glaciers, streaming rivers (the river Sindh & Nilagrad) and a number of beautiful lakes stocked with fish. One can drink the beauty of this place only to his/her heart's content. Also, it sits on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, NH1D. So little wonder why thousands of tourists throng here every year. One good stay just beside the highway is Hotel Glacier Heights which rewards you with breathtaking landscapes. To its north & next to its backyard rises a snow-covered steep rocky slope and to the south & south-west it unfolds a gigantic canvas of snow-capped rolling hills covered with thick pine woods at the upper regions and meadows at the foothills while tufts of cloud dusting the landscape with flakes of soft snow every now and then. Frequently, these meadows are interspersed with deep-cut small and large glaciers. To the east lies a beautiful valley while in the northeast lies Thajiwas glacier about 3 km away. Your cab will take you up leaving the highway & drop you at the doorstep of the ‘Hotel’. And almost instantly you’ll be greeted and welcomed by Mr Showkat Ahmad and his team. But as you enter their reception, wind you’re your way down their dining hall and finally to your double-bedded room fitted with a large room heater, large open windows with majestic curtains, neat & clean attached bath with toilet, geyser, you’ll very likely feel that the most fitting name of the hotel should have been Regal Heights. Yes, there is a regal ambiance inside the hotel. We’re literally blown away by the warm hospitality, charming behavior, and most assured 24x7 service from the hotel owner to the supervisor to waiters to cooks. They’re friendly to their ultimate limit. If you forget your lunch, the waiter will gently knock on your door and politely invite you to the dining hall. Breakfast and Dinner are free (of course included in the room rent) and served as a buffet. There are so many food items that even a foodie cannot decide what items are to be chosen from! In breakfast, you’ll get milk, cornflakes, fruit juice, watermelon, tea, kawa tea, coffee, sugar, bread, poha, sliced bread with toaster, butter, jam, jelly, boiled eggs, omelet, puri, curries, vegetable soup, salad……plus a lot of many others (I cannot remember all). In dinner, they’ll dish out chicken curry, rice, bread, roti, chapati, paneer curry, mixed-veg sabzi, pulse, soup, salad, …… a lot many more. Take as much as you need…….it’s a buffet! We booked a double-bedded room for @5500 per Night for our three nights of stay [26—28 April 2024] that included breakfast & dinner for two of us. On the 27th of morning while we were having our breakfast, a little girl hurried into the dining hall to break the news: ‘There’s the snowfall’. We rushed out with our cameras only to witness a memorable scenario: the cloud that hung low overnight was now being transformed into puffs of snowflakes precipitating in all directions—the north, south, east & west. And that snowfall continued unabated for 48 hours rewarding the children with ample opportunity to build penguin from snow. The hotel sports a park for the children in its front. Nice! ---- Prof P Chattopadhyay [26th April---28th April, 2024] Noteworthy Details: The hotel sits at the base of a steep mountain slope overlooking a valley flanked by snow-capped mountains on all sides. Actually, it is located in a valley through which passes the National Highway NH1D. The valley extends to the horizon in the east, while upholding a huge canvas of a mesmerizing landscape from south-east to the southwest which you can observe at the entrance. The superb lawn of the Hotel rewards an unobstructed view of snow-capped Sirbal peaks. The ambiance is calm, & quiet, and absolutely free from pollution. Even here you can access Internet Services. You can contact your hotels at Gulmarg, Srinagar, Leh-Ladakh, or book a cab by using your mobile fitted with a Kashmiri SIM card. You need not be worried: all these itineraries will be carried out by the Hotel manager. You can foot your hotel bills via Google Pay, ATM cards. Safety: 100% safe. Not a single penny of yours will get lost. They are courteous and extremely respectful to tourists. Women are safe. Food & drinks: Delicious foods are always freshly prepared. Hot tea & coffee are always available. Mineral water is also available at printed prices. Menus are not at all costly; they are moderately charged. You'll be served with free breakfast & dinner every day with an assortment of food & drink items served in a buffet system. Rooms: Built of wood, the rooms will protect you from subzero temperatures. Besides, a convective air heater coupled with a pair of high-quality blankets will provide you with extra warmth. Cots are wide-fitted with mattresses. All rooms are fitted with attached baths supplying you with hot water all the time. The toilets are very clean. A commode system with a handset will add to your comfort Nearby activities: Hire a pony [@Rs.1000] and embark on a thrilling journey to witness the awesome Thajiwas glacier, 3km away.
