I booked this property with the understanding (and even anticipation) of being in a place that was different from the norm and historic in origin. It fit that bill, but even coming in with different expectations did not cover the very poor experience. I will mention off the bat that the staff is very nice and the location cannot be beat. This is where the positives end. To start, the room is small; this was expected and honestly not an issue for me as I have taken many cruises over the years and the square footage was roughly comparable to a cabin onboard. What was not acceptable was the following: -TV non functional -USB ports on bedside clock non functional, meaning no USB charging in the room -Dark room that is very poorly lit -Complete inability to regulate water temperature; turn on hot=scalding hot. Turn hot down=scalding hot. Turn cold on with hot=scalding hot. Turn off hot and leave on cold=scalding hot. -Paper thin, single pane windows that are warped and do not close, which led to the biggest issue: NOISE Constant, incessant sound; trains, aircraft, traffic, people in the hallway… most of all, pounding music until 2AM. On the second night when I was unable to close the window, I did not sleep until roughly 4AM, this with a flight the next day. I called the front desk who did send a maintenance person despite the late hour (which was appreciated) in hopes they might have a quick fix for what I can only assume is a common occurrence. Nothing could be done. Imagine for a moment having a hotel window open a few hundred yards from a rock band playing, because that is literally what you will get if you stay at the Golden Gate. Even if you can block out the actual music with some magical device, the bass vibrates the floor and walls and consequently, the bed. The two worst nights I have ever had in a hotel have been spent at this property, and I stay away from home approximately 30-40 nights annually. I spend a lot of time in similarly inexpensive roadside/airport hotels and am not a complainer, feel free to check the rest of my reviews to verify. You. Will. Not. Sleep. Here. I understand the property is old, but modern windows can be fitted to historic structures, its done all the time in big cities that convert office buildings to hotels or condos. This location isn’t even all that great of a deal; Four Queens or the El Cortez are similar in price & condition and have more amenities. Even some strip resorts (the castle, pyramid or Harrah’s) will give you a similar rate in a vastly better environment (and yes, I know there are economies of scale in play but that should put an even greater emphasis on creating a better guest experience). I love history, I love Vegas and I was excited to stay at such a place that combined both, but even that couldn’t compensate for a property that in any other city would have been knocked down long ago considering such a refusal to update. You're a Michigan man Mr. Stevens; you can do better.

Great Fun Downtown

The Golden Gate remains small and intimate. All the staff members we dealt with were extremely pleasant. A special mention of Mike at the valet parking for just a little added service to help us at our checkin. We enjoyed our stay and it was our first time staying downtown. Once you get used to the party atmosphere (noise!) it was very fun and we slept just fine. The rooms are small but very comfortable and very clean. The only complaint (and I use the word loosely) was that it as hard to get the water in the shower to remain at a constant temperature.

Where do I start. DON'T stay there. Instantly disappointing. Valet parks car and puts luggage on a rack....but can't bring to the room. They only get paid with tips. We are in our 70's and had to haul luggage to our room. Hallway was almost to narrow for the cart. Room was soooo small could hardly get around. Small windows up by ceiling, can not look out. When getting on a chair and looking out it was a wall about 2 feet away. Lukewarm water....stayed 3 nights and could only take 1 shower brrrrr. Hotel has no conditioning in the winter...room was hot hot hot. Maid service never came to room to clean and bring towels. Gambling part of casino had friendly staff. NOW dealing with charges for the room that are not correct!!!

I ended up admitted to the hospital the night before check-in and the Golden Gate Front Desk Manager John Price was totally non-empathetic. No concern at all. Just dismissed the reason why and refused to refund the room charge. Bad customer service. I will never stay at this place. The certainly would never decide in your favor. Plenty of other places to stay. I hope they go out of business.

This room was booked in advance because it was super bowl weekend and it was $200 for a regular room. Out of curiosity, I looked up prices the day of check in and suites were $200 versus $100 for regular rooms. So, we asked for a suite at check in - that was a no. Then, the room was the smallest room I've ever seen in my entire life. I was so disappointed. I would never stay there again. Plus, the hotel has no restaurants.
