A grand restored mansion but definitely not a hotel in the modern sense

When I was looking for options to stay near the historic George Town, The Blue Mansion easily came on top of the Tripadvisor's ratings and most of its reviews were full of praise. Only later did I realise that most of these great reviews were actually of the Mansion and not exactly of the Hotel and the latter's standard of service. Moreover, unlike us a large chunk of these reviews were NOT from families travelling with young kids. Given that we were travelling with our 10 year old twins for their birthday celebrations we booked for a Han type room which promised to accommodate 3 adults. The hotel pre-charged the credit card a few days before our travel. As I knew two Han rooms existed I requested the hotel manager Daniel Selvantharan over email to allot us the quieter one. He replied saying that the Yantai room on the west wing was allotted to us and an extra bed would be available on request. We reached the hotel at about 5 PM after a train and Grab ride and this was well into their check-in hour. There was no one to assist us with our luggage at the front porch so myself and our Grab driver had to unload them. Now, Mr. Hakimi was sitting at the reception but he showed no inclination to help. Next, as he started to check us in he claimed that we got to pay extra since we had twins (!) while any extra bed would be chargeable too. This got me irritated and I had to show him my email communications with Daniel and so someone else then appeared from inside to finally do our check-in. Not exactly a grand welcome we thought! We were happier as we walked past the inner courtyards, including the one with the water bodies and then climbed up the stairs to enter Yantai. Being a Han type room this had an outer living room whose walls were painted in Cheong Fatt Tze's characteristic exterior indigo blue colour. This along with the lack of any sunlight filtering into the room, the dark wood furniture and darker mahogany coloured floor panels made this room dark and somewhat mysterious. There was a writing desk with 3 chairs, a chest of drawers, a long wooden clothes rail and a four poster canopied daybed. I would say the daybed was good for a single adult only while two young kids would have been a tight fit. On one side of the room there were these wooden louvred windows that opened into the inner courtyard. Unfortunately, the slats were fixed by nails and so there was no chance to operate them and thus no sunlight entered the room. Now the inner room or the main bed room was much larger and its walls were white painted, so appeared brighter. There was a queen sized bed, that we felt to be a bit low, a daybed cum sofa, then a table and a couple of chairs. A TV was atop a minibar cabinet that also had a Lavazza coffee machine. Then there was a wooden wardrobe where there was not much space to hang clothes though. Other interesting bits included a bluetooth enabled speaker and two windows which could be actually opened with some effort. The air-conditioning was rather poor especially in the larger bedroom while it was better in the outer living room perhaps because of it's smaller and darker set up. But, there was no cooling at all inside the bathroom that had a strange design. On one hand the checkerboard floor pattern and the clawfoot bathtub preserved its antique look but the rather small basin, lack of any table to keep stuff, the dysfunctional shower and the non-functional flush in the toilet and the extra heat inside made using the bathroom a rather frustrating exercise. Welcome amenities (in fact each evening) included three servings of sweet steamed rice cake which we didn't feel to be anything special. The property itself had been very well preserved as many other reviews have rightly pointed out. But service seemed to be an alien concept to most people in the hotel. And no one exuded this more than our friend Hakimi. When we requested him the extra bed promised by the manager he simply said there was no one to place the bed. When we asked for an extra bottle of water (beyond the 3 already placed) he said there were no extra bottles! He instead offered us a full plastic container, the ones placed upside down in office water dispensers. Beyond these whatever else we requested also came with negative replies and so after a while we stopped asking for anything. Then at night the party started! In spite of asking for a quieter room, as it turned out our room was next to this Red Garden Food Paradise where there were loud parties until well past midnight and into the early hours. That along with the inefficient cooling system and the low sunken-mattress bed shared with two 10 year old kids, you could very well imagine how any of us would have slept! The breakfast happened in the small courtyard next to the check-in area. Not much of a spread and only a handful of items to order as a-la-carte were there. But to their credit, these items came out well and were also nicely presented. On the first day, they even did a nice cake cutting for our kids, which we didn't expect and so was a plus. We had room-service lunch on the second day and the food, although it took a while, was very flavourful and came in good proportions for the price paid. Getting alcohol served into the room was a different matter altogether as there was no menu and we had to actually walk down the bar to place an order. The next day we had to catch an early morning flight and so checked out while deciding to skip their breakfast that had barely started by then. The person checking out (not Hakimi!) didn't ask if we had breakfast, didn't ask anything about the stay, flatly asked someone to haul our luggage from Yantai who in turn dumped them at the door and left. As our Grab to the airport came we ourselves hauled them into the cab. As we left the property no one even seemed to recognise us. It was a weird, impersonal, cold stay in a fantastically restored historic mansion where no one seemed to care about our existence.

Bloody excellent! We travelled and stayed at a different hotel wished we could have stayed there instead,if we would have realized sooner its a hotel instead. Four of us went for a dinner where this kind lady, Jafifa was willing to spare a wee time to share a little story about the old bugger who owned the place originally wedded 8 women in his life, brilliant! She then made an excellent recommendation of cocktails to my daughter, kwai fee lemongrass with little tangy taste and fresh lychee. Arnan, the bartender was a lovely chatty bloke and made us feel like we're back at home. The food in indigo was exceptional! We're back again last night but this time at the small blue door cafe named Mangga, even when it's raining, we refused to leave as the iced cold beers and excellent Jazz flowing together with the rain. Lady called Shuhada was kind to put up with both my wife and me daughter when they wanted to switch table because of the rain, which is perfect for us boys to have beers on me own! Wished we got there sooner before the rain for crikey sake!
