Really, how do I begin? The Meral Crown is okay as a place to stay. I consider it a "Saudi style" hotel with a particular style of furnishings that is typical in the Middle East. It is a hotel that has strengths and weaknessess. Ups and downs. I was given room 403 which is on the front of the hotel, but you really don't know it because of the small window facing the elevated metro line. The door and lock is a curious anomaly. The door doesn't readily close and the lock doesn't readily open. I learned that you have to hold the cardkey to the lock for a few seconds for it to engage - and that if you don't physically push the door closed, it just won't close. At all. I discovered this a number of times - luckily, theft in Saudi is met with harsh punishment so that mitigates some of the danger. The room was... nice. There's an entry room with seating for four and a small coffee table with an outdated flat screen tv that was small for the expanse of the room - and it was a sizable space with marble tile that gave way to a landing area in front of the tiny bathroom, then into a sizable bedroom with door. The bedroom had a king bed that was decently comfortable and nice linens. There was also a large boudoir to place your clothings with His and Her sides. No desk (a disappointment) but there was a makeup stand with stool for the lady. There were a couple of outlets but I would have preferred more. Overall, while you had the essentials to sit and sleep, the furnishings are best described as: spartan. The bathroom was a disappointment. Tiny, uncomfortable, with a shower stall that was only a basin surrounded by a flimsy curtain and very low water pressure. The water was hard so that made scrubbing with soap a difficulty - and by day 3 the water smelled sulfuric, like rotting eggs. Speaking of rotting eggs, the breakfast buffet was unappetizing. I went there the first morning and never went back. Low quality product, poor signage, just generally one of the poorest breakfast buffets I've ever experienced anywhere. I noted a number of OFWs (overseas foreign workers) as guests and I'm thinking management doesn't really consider these people so they give them the lowest possible quality. You will be better served going to one of local eateries for breakfast nearby. I went to use the pool one day and never went back. I didn't even get in. Perhaps it's because I'm from the West, but I like pool water to be clean and crystal clear. I don't like pool water that looks hazy. That's just being cheap as an operator. There is a gym but it looks like leftover, used, remnant equipment that's old and a bit rusty. There's supposed to be a health spa, and I did walk through the empty space that looks like it was under construction some time ago. It doesn't look like it will open anytime soon. The elevators are also curious. When you face them, the left elevator doesn't not fully align with the floors, creating a kind of edge to step down or up, and then it exhibits strange behavior that is not reassuring and makes you wonder if indeed the elevator is going to crash and kill you. The right elevator seemed to work perfectly normal and I used that the majority of the time. There is a lobby cafe and a restaurant, but after my breakfast experience, I didn't bother to try the restaurant. However, there is some okay outdoor seating to eat, drink coffee or smoke. The lobby itself is clean and decent with plenty of comfortable seating. As I review this, this sounds like a terrible place to stay. It's certainly not the greatest. The one area that I think this hotel has going for it are the staff. Abdulaziz at the front desk was alway very friendly and helpful. Most of the staff that interacted with were very nice and helpful. Many of the issues I saw at this property were indicative of management and their priorities, which is obviously to save as much money as they can.

Bad internet Breakfast buffet is ridiculous Shame on them to mention that they have a breakfast “ buffet” , dishes almost empty and not because of guests , nop, they serve it like this 👎🏼 I wish I didn’t come here at all

Booking.com and double payments

I arrived late at night and checked in, handing over my credit card. As soon as I’d done so I remembered that booking.com had taken my full Payment at Point of booking even showing the receptionists my bank debit notice. The hotel said they had not received the money from booking.com and tried telling me that booking.com hadn’t taken my money. There was no apology or concern that they might be in the wrong at the hotel and they were rushing me through the check in process so I demanded time to call booking.com Fifteen minutes later booking.com confirmed they HaD taken full payment and that the hotel was wrong to take the money again. Booking.com said they would call the hotel while I stayed on line. I then watched something out of a Fawlty Towers sketch as the receptionist pretended he could only speak Arabic and he said “no speak English” when he’d been talking English to me for the previous ten minutes. Booking.com refunded me and the hotel blissfully oblivious to the fact I’m fuming !! Trust me! I will not be back here in a hurry. That’s atrocious customer service whenever in the world you are. I feel cheated, lied to and not one single apology from any of the men on the front desk tonight. You should be ashamed of yourselves and I certainly wouldn’t employ any one of you.

Second time I’ve stayed here and I’ve always found it to be spot on. Great coffee shop with friendly staff and nothing seems to much trouble for anybody. The food is simple, cheap and tasty. The rooms are spacious, clean and well appointed. I’ve no idea how it compares to ‘western’ hotels in Riyadh but I’d happily stay here again. Only downside is that there is very little parking out front. The new Metro line is literally right outside the front of the hotel with a station about 400m up the road.
