Vadnagar’s claim to fame may be its provenance as the birthplace of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but this sleepy little town in Gujarat has a few other aces up its sleeve. Its history stretches back more than two millennia, and recent archaeological excavations have indicated that a thriving city existed here as far back as the 1st century. Various ruins and relics from bygone eras dot its landscape, even as the beautiful lake at its center serves as an epicenter of rural bliss.
The main city lies encircled by a fortress wall with six massive gates of which the Amarthol gate area is the oldest existing quarter still in use. Toranas, believed to be victory arches, can be seen along the shore of Lake Sharmishtha. These commemorative arches are said to have been constructed by Solanki rulers in the area sometime between the 8th and 11th centuries. These majestic four-storey-tall red sandstone edifices are truly impressive.
Local markets in Vadnagar are full of charming finds such as local bandhej fabrics, silver jewelry, local sweets and snacks known as ‘farsan’, a specialty of Gujarat.
Apart from this, there are several temple complexes, such as Amther Mata and Hatkeshvar, featuring exquisite carvings in red and yellow sandstone.
The re-fitted motorcycle-cum-carriages are the best way to get around rural and semi-urban Gujarat. Alternatively, you could use state transport buses to travel over longer distances or hire a car to get around Vadnagar comfortably.
On a daily basis there are approximately 135 flights that operate at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India are the most popular airline brands that fly frequently to this airport.
