In some ways, Nandurbar in Maharashtra is only in its infancy, especially when compared to the many ancient cities across India. It was a part of the Dhule region till 1998, after which the area was divided into Dhule and Nandurbar. Today, Nandurbar is an important municipal constituency of Maharashtra. The Narmada River is at the northern boundary of the region, further increasing its importance to the state.
Although the city’s creation may be fairly recent, the region’s history can be traced quite far back. Nandurbar in fact gets its name from a king who once ruled the area—King Nandaraj. Many dynasties ruled over this region, most notable among them being the Yadavas, the Satavahanas and the Mauryans. Being a largely agricultural region, the landscape of Nandurbar is rather pretty. The Narmada dam itself is quite a sight, and if you go a little further up, you’ll find yourself at one of the most beautiful hill stations in Maharashtra, Toranmal. Of course, with temples galore, Nandurbar is also an important religious destination for many Hindu pilgrims.
Numerous temples dot the town of Nandurbar. Most of these are extremely old, with the precise origins of many still unknown. Make a trip to Dakshin Kashi temple in Prakasha, which is believed to be one of the oldest and most sacred of the region. The Devi Mogra Mata temple was built for and by the Adivasis, so some of the rituals you will witness here will be out of the ordinary.
Try and plan your visit around Datta Jayanti to witness the major fair that takes place at the Shri Datta Temple in Sarangkheda. The ancient practice of selling horses still continues here till this day. For a dose of mythology, visit Ashthamba, which is known for its mention in the Mahabharata. The Ganesh Temple and the Umaj Mata Temple are also worth visiting.
If you’ve come to Nadurbar, make it a point to visit Toranmal, a hill station that happens to be the second highest point in the state of Maharashtra. The banks of the Yashwant Lake make for a great tourist spot. Unapdev in the nearby district of Shahada is also popular with tourists.
