Before Lucknow rose to prominence as the seat of the Nawabs, it was the city of Faizabad that held all the Nawabi glory as the capital of Awadh province. Although the reign of the Nawabs lasted here for only a few centuries, it transformed the city’s culture and landscape with a lasting influence. Nawab Saadat Ali Khan I may be credited as the city’s founder, but most of the prominent monuments dotting today’s Faizabad were created during the reign of Shuja-ud-Daula. In his time, the city became famous across the country for its infrastructure, bazaars, palaces and gardens. The classical Nawabi architecture of the surviving Gulab Bari, Bahu Begum Ka Maqbara and Fort Calcutta continue to remain a delight for all travelers.
Today, the city of Faizabad is an interesting mix of old world and new. A number of educational institutes, industries, mills and sugar refineries may be taking over parts of the city, but just travel to the city’s outskirts and you will see lush farming fields and ruins of the Nawabi palaces along the scenic River Saryu. Most travelers to Faizabad combine the tour of this city with Ayodhya, a deeply religious site for Hinduism, located just a few kilometers from the river.
Guptar Ghat is just about five km from Faizabad’s railway station. Associated with the events of the epic Ramayana, the Ghat offers a soothing experience with the flowing River Saryu in the evening. Several prominent temples such as Hanuman Mandir, Charan Paduka and Ram Janaki are present near Guptar Ghat.
A remarkably maintained rose garden, Gulab Bari is believed to have been created during 1775, making it one of the oldest gardens in the region. Tourists can walk past a vast array of vibrant rose beds.
Bahu Begum Ka Maqbara is yet another example of fine Nawabi architecture. Among the tallest structures in Faizabad, Bahu Begum Ka Maqbara was created for the beloved of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula. Climb to the top of the tomb to get a breathtaking view of the city of Faizabad.
