History tells us that Beed was founded, or at least inhabited, back in the 10th or 11th century. Based on the remnants and ruins of monuments, temples and buildings in the city, archaeologists claim that the city was perhaps founded by the Yadava rulers from Devagiri. Later Beed, like Latur, was part of the Hyderabad province under the Nizam rulers, before officially becoming a part of Maharashtra in 1960.

The major fort of the city, though in ruins, is still the pride and joy of Beed. Standing on the banks of the Bensura River, it is an imposing structure that has been saving the city from floods since its construction.
The Khazana Well and the well at the Khandoba temple also display magnificent architecture, and attract tourists in hordes. The Jama Masjid here is a stunning mosque, and the Mansuri Shah Tomb in the eastern part of the city is also worth visiting.
