Historically and mythically significant, Shamli, in Uttar Pradesh, has an interesting story to tell. Carved out of Muzaffarnagar, this town and district is believed to have been a part of the Kuru kingdom during the times of the epic saga, the Mahabharata. Located near the borders of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Punjab, the town is an eclectic mix of cultural and linguistic influences. Given its proximity to the center, Shamli was an important seat of power during the Mughal reign as well, and was governed directly by the Imperial court.
Decades later, Shamli played a significant role in the First War of Independence in the 19th century, and subsequently, had to face harsh consequences when the British prevailed.
Nonetheless, Shamli put its past behind it, and today, thanks to its fertile land, is one of the largest growers and suppliers of sugarcane and sugar in north India.
Intrinsically and culturally Indian, Shamli provides an interesting perspective to the discerning traveler.
