Established on 1st April, 2003, the North Central Railways is one of the seventeen railway zones in India. It covers the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana. It also has the fastest train in the Indian Railway system, the Bhopal Shatabdi, which touched close to 150 km/ph on the New Delhi-Agra route.
The three divisions which the North Central Railways is divided into are:
Allahabad - The largest commercial city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad has the third highest GDP in the state and has the strange honor of being home to seven of the thirteen prime ministers of India. It is also the place of communion of the sacred rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Thus there are thousands of pilgrims who make their way to the city to worship, especially at the time of the auspicious Kumbh Mela. Allahabad Junction is the headquarters of the North Central Railways.
Jhansi - Located in southern Uttar Pradesh, Jhansi is situated between the Pashupati and Betwa rivers. Jhansi has been connected by rail since the late 1880s. It is the station for tourists intending to go Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Orchha. Earlier a part of the Central Railways, Jhansi was reorganized under the North Central Railways and is an integral part of the railway network in Uttar Pradesh.
Agra - The famous city of Agra forms the third division of the North Central Railways and its splendor and glory provide many an attraction for those who wish to see the signs of Mughal glory of the old.
