Ah, simpler times. When all your dessert cravings could be satiated by the four or five mithai and ice cream shops in the city. For Indian delights you’d head to KC Das at the end of Church Street or Bhagatram’s for an oval rendition of a warm gulab jamun. For ice creams and sundaes, it had to be Corner House (hi, DBC), or Lakeview for their splendid in-house chocolate sauce and fresh cream.
All birthdays were celebrated with Sweet Chariot’s Black Forest or Dark Chocolate cake, and Christmas gifting always included a rich boozy plum cake from Koshy’s.
As the city extended its boundaries to include Whitefield and Devanahalli, it also diversified its dessert cravings. Despite the unwavering popularity of the old guard, all things creamy and new have (b)reached Bangalore’s palate. Now you’ll see rolled ice creams, froyo, nitrogen mist-laden cotton candy glasses, layered sponges in mason jars and tempered chocolate globes that encase all your sweet dreams. And in some cases, your nightmares.
Here’s a quick list of all the sweet, new visitors in Bangalore.
Crème Rolls At Berry’d Alive, Indiranagar & Church Street
Berry’d Alive will sort out all your dessert cravings. Their menu features crème rolls, puddings, pies, tarts, flan, Pavlovas and cheese cakes. Every plate of dessert has an element of surprise you’ll love, and the multiple flavours of in-house ice creams will keep you going back for more.
Bonus Recommendation: Haagen Daz, Indiranagar.
Berry’d Alive: 79, 12th Main Road, Appareddipalya, Indiranagar.
Froyo At Menchies, Indiranagar
This is Bangalore’s biggest frozen yogurt chain. They have a limited menu and charge by the gram; may we weigh in on the Twizzler with fresh fruit toppings? Also, be sure to get a bit of the Oreo froyo and as strange as it sounds, top it with crushed Kiwi. One part tang and one part crunch.
Menchies: 100 Feet Road, opposite Toit bar, Indiranagar.
Rolled Ice Creams At Roll Over, Indiranagar
Thai version of a rolled ice cream. In a flavourful, tightly packed little cylinder, you will find a burst of chocolate and a hit of chili that that will send a shiver up your spine. Our pick here is the Irish Coffee with just the right amount of cream rolled in.
Roll Over: 2984,12th Main Road, Hal, HAL 2nd Stage, Indiranagar
Bonus Recommendation: Hokey Pokey, Koramangala.
Gourmet Pastries At Spoonful of Sugar, Indiranagar
If you order your cakes from this mother-daughter duo, life will never be frosty. While their menu features a wide range of salads, pastas and other savoury foods, it’s the sweet baked goodies that take the cake, quite literally. The fruit gateaux and chocolate truffle are huge crowd pleasers, but it’s the tiramisu and marquis au chocolate that’s the ultimate indulgence. Spoonful of Sugar also has a small spread of American cakes you won’t get elsewhere in Bangalore.
Spoonful of Sugar: 421/G, 1st Main, 3rd Cross, 1st Stage, Indiranagar
Bonus Recommendation: Bangalore Baking Company in JW Marriot, Vittal Mallya Road.
Gelato At Gelateria Montecatini Terme, Indiranagar
At Gelataria Montecatini you can spoon brand new flavours every week, including Russian vodka, chilli mint and the summer favourite, jackfruit. The airy gelato is the perfect end to a heavy meal, giving you just the right dose of something sweet and chilled.
Gelataria Montecatini: 298, 6th Main, 2nd Stage, Indiranagar.
Bonus Recommendation: Gelato Italiano, multiple locations.
So grab and a spoon and bring some friends. Because there’s a whole lot of sweet out there and it needs to be shared.
