Part of the Vidarbha district of Maharashtra, Yavatmal is one of those towns in which you will experience the real essence of the state. A city that is comfortable where it is in terms of growth and development, Yavatmal is a typical Indian small town—narrow roads lined with row houses, rolling green hills, and warm locals for whom love often equals food.
Back in the 14th century, Yavatmal belonged to the Berar Sultanate of the Deccan, and was believed to be the ‘safest place in the world’. It was then passed onto the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Empire, before the British took over. Traces of the city’s entire past are still visible in the architecture of various buildings, and the culture of the people. An important manufacturing region for Maharashtra, Yavatmal is home to many plants including textile specialists Raymonds and FMCG giant Unilever. Though predominantly Maharashtrian, Yavatmal is a melting pot of languages, cultures and religion that is always ready to welcome anyone with open arms.
Experience nature’s bounty while in Yavatmal by visiting the many wildlife sanctuaries in the city, such as the Painganga, Tipeshwar and Kinwat reserves. Plan your trip in the winter months to make the most of the nippy weather, the lush greenery and the vast swathes of agricultural land. Summers are rather harsh here, with the mercury rising up to 48-49 degrees, so better to avoid the city then.
The marketplaces in Yavatmal are inherently local, so walk around and take your pick from indigenous crafts, wares and fruit to take back as souvenirs. Yavatmal also celebrates a number of fairs through the year, thanks to its burgeoning population of various tribes, such as the Gond Raja and the Gond Pardham. If you can, plan your trip around one of these fairs, maybe the Maroti and Gajanan Maharaj Fair in Ghatanji or the Shri Dutt Jayanti Fair at Mahur. It’s the chance to get to experience the lifestyle of those living in the heart of the state.
Auto rickshaws ply to almost anywhere in Yavatmal. Though many do use meters, if you don’t spot one, fix the fare before you board it. Buses are also available through the city, or you can hire a car for a more comfortable trip.
On a daily basis there are approximately 38 flights that operate at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.IndiGo and Air India are the most popular airline brands that fly frequently to this airport.
By road Yavatmal is surrounded by Wardha, Badnera, Arvi which are 39.63 km, 41.01 km, 42.24 km away respectively. These places are ideal spots for people to plan their short weekend break.
