'Situated on the western banks of the Ganges, the Ramnagar Fort was the ancestral seat of the Maharajas, once the rulers of Varanasi (or Banaras). It is believed that in the era of the Mahabharata, the fort of Ramnagar was the abode of the author of the great epic—Ved Vyas himsef. It was named Vyas Kashi after him. Today the fort is home to a unique museum, called the Ramnagar Museum. It displays a royal collection of palkies or palanquins, vintage cars, swords and arms belonging to the Maharajas and so on. The fort is particularly worth a visit when it hosts the annual spectacle of Ram-Lila which is an enactment of the Ramayana. '
