'Situated far south of all the ghats on the Ganga, the Assi ghat is considered to be one of the most important ghats in Varanasi. It is a fascinating site due to its physical as well as metaphorical manifestations of confluences. The Assi ghat marks the meeting point of the rivers Ganga and Assi. The ghat is also popular among devotees for the Shiva Lingam beneath a peepul tree nearby. Thereby forming the metaphorical confluence of the worshipping places of two deities, Goddess Ganga and Lord Shiva. The celebrated Indian poet saint Tulsi Das, known for his devotional poetry is said to have composed his major works at the Assi ghat.'
