Vast ruins of various forts point to the glorious history of Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh. Originally named Tehri, it is believed that the name Tikamgarh later came from the fort in the city. Tikamgarh was the stronghold of many a mighty dynasty, including the Ochras, the Bundelas, the Mauryas, the Guptas and the Mughals. Although the town’s ancient history is largely undocumented, remains of structures that seem like they were imposing and impenetrable once upon a time, suggest that the region has seen much more than we know.
Today, Tikamgarh is a well-known tourist destination in northern Madhya Pradesh. Apart from forts and palaces of yore, the area is replete with ancient temples and scenic beauty in the form of lakes and riverside views. Tikamgarh is one of those places in India where religion and history meet nature in seamless harmony.
The Garh Kudar Fort is one of the area’s foremost tourist spots. Located on a hilltop, this fort was built in the 16th century and houses a small temple and a huge water tank within its complex. Every Monday, there is a market in the fort where locals sell local wares. Do try and plan your visit for a Monday so that you can sample some of these wares and take them home as mementoes of your visits.
The nearby Orchha village is also visited by many people through the year especially because of its many beautiful and old temples. Hindu pilgrims come to seek blessings and, in the process, witness the ruins of the Orchha kingdom that used to rule here during the 16th century.
Kundeshwar is another popular religious spot in the Tikamgarh region. The Kundadev Mahadev Temple here is visited by devotees from all over the country. The village also has an archaeological museum worth visiting and a number of picnic spots such as the Usha Waterfall.
There are a number of other Hindu and Jain temples and riverside picnic spots that can be enjoyed while visiting Tikamgarh.
Tikamgarh’s local bus service is well connected and fairly reliable. Shared and single auto-rickshaws are also available. You can hire a private taxi or car from a local car rental and explore the region at your own pace and convenience.
