'Also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas and today as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, the Viceregal Lodge is a commanding colonial structure dating back to the British reign. Built on the Observatory Hills in Shimla, this was the residence of the British Viceroy Lord Dufferin and was designed by architect Henry Irvine. The imposing structure seems like something out of a Jane Austen novel, with its spacious halls, movie-like winding stairways, tall ceilings, large windows, teak-paneled galleries, and verandahs and terraces galore. A guided tour of the whole lodge is available till 5pm every day, along with the gardens and courtyards as well. Naturally, the Viceregal Lodge holds great historic significance. '
