The city, now a vital part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, was coined after another name of the river Narmada. Once the capital of a princely state where India’s first white tiger was sighted, Rewa’s kings and rare white tigers have both long passed into the pages of the history books. The region’s rich geography was perhaps the principal factor which attracted the man and the beast both, and its thick forests have been largely preserved ever since, by the locals as a mark of respect for nature. Most tourists love wandering through the gorgeous hiking trails of Rewa.
Bandhavgarh National Park, once the hunting grounds of the royal dynasties, is among the most sought-after attractions near Rewa. While the sighting of no white tiger has been reported in the last fifty years, the park still prides itself on being the natural reserve with the highest tiger density in the country. So if you have long fancied a chance to climb on an elephant’s back or experience a tiger safari, then Rewa offers the highest odds. Scattered waterfalls and lakes form picturesque weekend spots for most locals. A few well-maintained forts, palaces and museums are all that’s left of Rewa’s once influential dynasties.
Spending a day at Bandhavgarh National Park remains a favorite activity for almost every traveler. Present near the lush Vindhyan hill range, Bandhavgarh offers a great chance to spot threatened Indian tigers.
Purwa Falls is one of the four major waterfalls of Rewa. The cool water of the river Tamsa cascades down almost vertically from a height of about 70 meters.
Govindgarh Palace is a museum with collections belonging to the former rulers of Rewa. Filled with teeming flora and fauna, it has several beautiful artificial islands near a lake.
You can opt for buses, taxis or auto-rickshaws to roam the city while in Rewa. Although a safari across Bandhavgarh National Park is best experienced from sitting on top of an elephant’s back, jeeps are also a quick way to navigate this vast natural reserve.
By road Rewa is surrounded by Satna, Sidhi, Maihar which are 27.5 km, 37.0 km, 39.36 km away respectively. These places are ideal spots for people to plan their short weekend break.
