'In the middle of a crossroad and standing at one end of Rajpath is India’s own ‘Arc-de-Triomphe’ — India Gate. Similar to the French monument, this archway remembers the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died for the British Army during World War I. It was designed by the famous Edwin Lutyens, who is believed to be the architect of New Delhi itself. Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame that burns day and night under the arch, was added after India’s independence in the memory of the soldiers who died in the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971. A floodlit India Gate is especially pleasing after dark.'
