More popularly known as Patan, Lalitpur is considered the arts and architectural capital of Nepal. Durbar Square, with its concentration of traditional temples, palaces and other monuments, is the locale that is most visited by tourists when in Lalitpur. The region has such a wealth of historical and cultural artifacts that it has collectively been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though many of these temples and structures were destroyed in the recent earthquake that shook the very core of Nepal, the region is well worth a visit. Tourists visiting the region can also help in rehabilitation and conservation efforts. The main palace and temple are the biggest attractions here.
To really get a feel of the city, stroll around at a leisurely pace and shop at the fair-price shops around Durbar Square, where you will find beautifully crafted handicrafts at extremely attractive prices. Foodies will also be satisfied with the numerous eateries and restaurants in the region that mainly cater to tourists.
There are a number of other temples and shrines in and around the city that you should also check out during your visit. Some of these include Rudra Varna Mahavihar, Golden Temple, Kumbeshwar Temple and Ashok Stupa, among others.
While taxis and local minibuses are easily available to get around the city, Lalitpur is a place that is best explored and experienced on foot.
