The region has been held under the sway of various rulers including the Mughals, the Nizams and the Peshwas. At one point in the early 19th century, the region was completely deserted due to extreme suppression of its people by the Holkars and the extreme famine that hit during the time. Over time, the city was repopulated and gradually got back on its feet. Today, thanks to its interesting history, Dhule is dotted with forts and temples that appeal to tourists from all over the world.
