A seat of the Dravidian rulers for several centuries, Chittoor is on the holiday list of every traveler to South India. The ‘temple of seven hills’ or Sri Venkateswara Temple was established in the 12th century. The presiding deity here is Lord Balaji. Present at an altitude of over 800 meters from the sea level, the temple’s design reflects a mixed influence of the Pallava, Pandya and Chola traditions. The main shrine has a gold dome.
Near the confluence of the Aragonda and Ponnai rivers sits Kalavagunta. Not far from Chittoor, Kalavagunta is home to numerous ancient Hindu temples. Among the most famous temples are the ones that belong to the 9th century Chola dynasty.
Gurramkonda Fort is perched on top of a high hill. Built during the times of Vijayanagara Empire, this fort came under the control of the Golconda sultans. It is believed that the famous Mysore rulers, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, once occupied Gurramkonda Fort, too.
