What do fragrant rice, brass artifacts and beautiful lakes have in common?
It’s a sleepy little town called Bhandara. Literally meaning ‘storehouse’, Bhandara is also home to a huge ordnance factory that manufactures products for the armed forces. Bhandara’s history stretches back to the 11th Century—the Haihaya Rajputs, Gond tribals, Peshwas and Nizams have all ruled over this region in the past. And almost all have left indelible marks of their culture and history on this region.
Bhandara is home to rustic forts and remnants of past eras juxtaposed against untouched greenery and vast water bodies. This undiscovered gem in the interiors of Maharashtra is ideal for those looking for some peace and quiet in scenic environs with friendly locals.
Bhandara is known as the rice bowl of Maharashtra. Fragrant rice varieties such as the Chinnor, Dubhraj and Kalikammod, are much sought-after around the country. Situated on the banks of the Vainganga River, the district is hemmed in by the Satpuda range on the north, where several pristine lakes and waterfalls dot the countryside, making it a haven for nature lovers.
The Chandpur Dam is an earthfill dam on the Chandpur River and offers breathtaking views from its wall. The city and its surrounding district are also rich in historical architecture like forts and palaces. Sangadi Kila, Ambagadh Fort, Tumsar Fort, Paoni Kila, Pande Mahal and Bhandara Mahal all offer exciting glimpses into the lives of kings of long ago. They are all within driving distance of Bhandara city and offer panoramic views of the surrounding villages and lush paddy fields.
The city and surrounding areas are known for putting up great shows during festivals such as Makarsankrant (January), Mahashivratri (February- March), and Gaimukh Yatra Mandai Utsav (Oct- December), including lavani dances, folk dramas (nautanki) and great local fare.
The best way to travel in and around Bhandara is by private taxis that are available in the main city. MSTRC buses do ply between Bhandara and other cities in the state but are best avoided. Tourist bus services from Bhandara city are also available, but services are not too frequent.
