Bathinda primarily offers a heritage experience. Even though the town is part of Sikh-dominated Punjab, its landscape and culture has been greatly influenced over many centuries by Muslim and Hindus traditions as well. So you will find ‘Mazaar of Peer Haji Rattan’, one of Bhatinda’s prominent Muslim shrines, sharing its walls with a Hindu temple and a Sikh Gurudwara. Earlier known as Bikramgarh, the town witnessed the reign of famous rulers such as Razia Sultana, Prithviraj Chauhan, Mohammad Ghori and Iltutmish. Some of their imposing structures, like Qila Mubarak and Bahia Fort, still loom over the city like sentinels from the past.
Most locals love the greenery and picturesque setting of Bhatinda’s five artificial lakes. Tourists and goods arrive here in large number as the town remains one of India’s biggest rail junctions. Today’s Bathinda is a town of narrow alleys, vibrant street bazaars, and agricultural and industrial centers–all spawning against a beautiful backdrop of Gurudwaras, shrines, temples, forts and lakes.
While the city has several Gurudwaras, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib remains the most revered among them. Located in the Talwandi village, it is connected with the tales of Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. This place is also central to the warrior sect of Sikhism, the Nihangs. Apart from three sacred tanks, the complex also has 10 Gurudwaras.
The imposing Quila Mubarak is also locally known as Bhatinda Fort. An ancient monument with an impressive façade, it gained prominence after Razia Sultana, India’s first Empress, was imprisoned here.
A favorite picnic spot for the locals on most weekends, Bhatinda Lake has a serene landscape with a well-made promenade for a relaxed evening stroll. Apart from a number of restaurants nearby, visitors can enjoy boating on Kashmir-styled Shikaras.
Constructed over a vast space, Rose Garden impresses visitors with its many walkways winding through a lush garden of roses.
About 29 km from the city, Maiser Khana temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Devotees arrive in large numbers for the two annual fairs held here.
