Meaning ‘bamboo country’, Banswara in Rajasthan is a beautiful city of scenic locales and aged temples. Banswara was founded by Maharawal Jagmal Singh and was later established as a princely state under the Rajputs during the British reign. The city is also known as the ‘City of a Hundred Islands’ because of the many small islands located on the River Mahi, which flows through the region.
Surrounded by lush greenery, the flowing river and a dam, Banswara makes for a great escape from the bustling crowds of urban life. The Mahi dam, the lakes and gardens spread across the city are popular picnic spots with locals and tourists alike. There are, of course, a number of beautiful old temples in Banswara as well, which are visited by devotees all year round.
The Mahi Dam located on the River Mahi is a spot you must visit as soon as you get to Banswara. The view of the river water gushing out of the dam surrounded by the verdant greenery of the hills is breathtaking, and spending some time with a picnic basket and some loved ones promises to be a wonderful experience.
Another scenic location is the Dialab Lake close to Banswara. You can indulge in some boating here on the lake, which is covered with lotus flowers. Just sitting by the lake and catching the sunset is an experience in itself.
The artificial Anand Sagar Lake is yet another picnic spot in Banswara that is thronged by locals and tourists, especially during the weekends. This lake is surrounded by a number of trees that are believed to be holy, and many Hindu pilgrims visit them to get their wishes fulfilled.
The places of worship in and around Banswara include Hindu temples and Islamic dargahs, which include the Abdullah Pir (known for the annual fair it hosts), the area of Arthuna, where there are many Hindu and Jain temples dating back to the 11th century, and the cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located called Madareshwar Temple.
Unmetered auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are easily available throughout Banswara, although the city would be best explored by foot. You can hire a private taxi or car and go exploring at your own pace and convenience.
