Disconnected from the chaos and labyrinths of urban cities, nestled high up in the lap of the Himalayas is the beautiful district of Bageshwar. Named after Lord Shiva himself, who is also known as the Tiger God, Bageshwar is believed to have been the abode of the lord as some point. The town is dotted with temples, most of them worshipping Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati.

The Baghnath Temple in Bageshwar is perhaps the most important tourist site in the town, from historical, religious and architectural points of view. This temple was built in 1450 AD by a royal of the Chand dynasty, Laxmi Chand. Baghnath Temple is situated at the confluence of the Rivers Saryu and Gomti, and is believed by devotees to be very powerful and holy. Although the temple is visited by many through the year, the festival of Shivratri sees a massive swell in the number of devotees. The temple’s architecture harks back to the era it was built in, with detailed inscriptions found in many places. This one mustn’t be missed.
There are a number of other temples around Bageshwar, each ready to narrate its own unique story and history. A few worth visiting include Chandika, dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the historic pilgrimage site of Bajinath, and the cave temple of Gauri Udyar.
