'Aurangabad’s deep historical roots can be traced through these caves situated at a distance of about 2 km from the main city. The Aurangabad Caves consist of three different sets according to the order of their excavations. The structures found here belong to the Hinayana sect of Buddhism. Some of these caves have yet not been completely excavated on account of the dangerous rock formations around it. The caves mostly consist of Buddhist structures such as Viharas and shrines dedicated to Lord Buddha. The later parts of the caves belong to the Kalachuri Dynasty. One of the cave entrances has a skillfully carved panel inscribed with Bodhisattva and Avalokiteshwara litanies.'
