Let your eyes wander over amazing gilt work, stained glass windows and bright, enameled decorations. and wonder how it all would have looked like a century ago under flickering lamplight.A giant stone elephant at Hathi Bhata, the ancient and beautiful temple of Gokarnesvara at Bisalpur, the marble edifice of the Diggi Kalyan Ji Temple, and the Hadi Rani Baori stepwell, dating back to the 12th century, are some of the other important historical structures in Tonk. As with any city in Rajasthan, you haven’t really known it unless you visit its colorful bazaars selling everything from bright bandhini fabric to silver jewelry, and, a Tonk specialty, carved sandstone artifacts.Auto-rickshaws, camels and camel-carts are the primary means of transport in and around Tonk. You could hire a taxi to escape the heat and travel more comfortably.Tonk is in the desert and you ought to be prepared for the usual suspects—sand, strong sunlight and huge differentials in day and night time temperatures, even in the summer.
