In the heart of Punjab, just off the highway that leads to Jalandhar, with Jalandhar on one side and Ludhiana on the other, lies a small hamlet town called Phagwara. Best known for its religious inclination, agricultural prowess, and for having the maximum number of NRIs in the state, Phagwara is an important district of Punjab
Although, today, Phagwara contributes heavily to the state by way of agricultural produce, the manufacture of agricultural tools and cotton and textile industries, the city was first founded by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a small marketplace. While many of these markets still exist, adding a historic charm to the region, Phagwara today is more about progress and religious devotion. It is believed that the Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, visited and stayed in Phagwara for a while, and the city was named after one of his devout disciples.Beautiful architectural structures, in the form of various places of worship, including temples, gurudwaras, and churches, beckon you to this oft-overlooked little town. The temples and gurudwaras of Phagwara are truly worth visiting. Dedicated to Ma Kali, the Devi Talab Mandir is known for its beautiful religious ceremonies that revolve around serenading the goddess with classical music. The Shiv Temple is another must-see site, as the structure of this mandir fuses the styles of Hindu and Muslim architecture seamlessly.Phagwara is also known for celebrating local festivals with pomp and gusto. Try and plan a trip around Lohri, Dussehra, Guru Nanak’s birthday, or Holi to get swept up in the enthusiasm.Though local buses and shared auto-rickshaws are common modes of transport for the people of Phagwara, these do not guarantee comfort. You’re better off hiring a car in Ludhiana or Amritsar, to drive down to Phagwara. Dress and behave respectfully, especially in places of worship.Women should avoid venturing out alone, especially after dark
