Damoh is a small town located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Surrounded by fertile plains alternating with forested tracts, Damoh is the base from which you can explore the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary that houses several species of animals, and is a potential site for cheetah reintroduction in India
Apart from this, you can catch glimpses of small-town life in its dusty, crowded streets and visit the many local temples and the ruins of an 18th century fort located close by.Damoh has had a long and interesting history—this city and its surrounding areas have been continuously inhabited and ruled by different dynasties over the centuries. Beginning from the Guptas of Pataliputra to Samudragupta and Chandragupta, Damoh was also ruled by the Kalchuri dynasty, the Chandels, the Gonds, Mughals and the British.Testimonies to this legacy remain scattered around the countryside, but sadly have not seen many conservation or protective efforts, apart from the lone Puratatva Sangrahalaya that houses some excavated relics. The Rajnagar Fort is a site recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India, but even here only an old masonry wall stands in place of the magnificent fort that once was. While in Damoh you could visit the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary and catch glimpses of tigers, leopards, wolves, wild dogs and many more animals amidst dense teak forests. Religious shrines such as Giri Darshan and the Bandakpur Shiv Mandir are also worth a dekko.Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of transport within the city. For sites a little far off, it is best to hire a car or safari jeeps that can be rented from the main city center or points closer to the sanctuary.Do dress conservatively while visiting religious shrines.Avoid venturing out alone after dark, particularly in forested areas.
