The derivation of the city name is debated. While one set of people believe that it was named after the goddess Gauri Bhawani, wife of Lord Shiva, others claim that it was named after a Rajput queen named Bhani. Either way, the city and district of Bhiwani is also referred to as Bhawani by many.History suggests that Bhiwani was an important center of commerce during the Rajputana and Mughal rule. The city finds mentions in the Ain-i-Akbari, the historic manuscript that documented Akbar’s rule. In fact, it is believed that Bhiwani was founded by Rajput King, Neem, the husband of the queen after whom the city was named.Apart from temples, Bhiwani is known for being the hometown of several boxers who represent India at international tournaments—this is a great source of pride and joy for the locals.Located on the banks of one of the tributaries of River Ganga, Bhiwani offers some lovely, scenic views. Nonetheless, the best reason to visit this city is undoubtedly for the spiritual experience.Known as ‘Mini Kashi’ or ‘Small Kashi’, Bhiwani is dotted with temples, big and small. A few of the temples you could visit include the Vaishno Devi Temple, a replica of the original one in Jammu, Hanuman Mandir, Gauri Shankar Temple, dedicated to the Goddess after whom the city was named, and Shitla Devi Mandir, among many others.If you’ve traveled to Bhiwani, you must visit the wing of the Sports Authority of India here, as it has produced many famous boxers in recent years, including Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar and Vijender Kumar.The Star Monument is another important landmark in the city of Bhiwani. Built for the Radhaswami Satsang group, the structure gets its name from its star shape. It is hexagonal, with alternate sides made of marble and glass. There is a beautiful garden outside the building as well.A number of bus services ply throughout the city and can take you to nearby districts as well. Auto-rickshaws are also easily available almost anywhere in Bhiwani. Hire a private taxi to visit the temples at your own pace.Avoid stepping out after dark. Women should not venture out alone at any time of the day
