Its many shrines and temples dedicated to several historic and local deities are visited by devotees from across the country.Pura Maha Dev is a popular pilgrimage center and the termination point of an annual grueling trek that starts from Haridwar in Uttarakhand in the Hindu lunar month of Shravan. Called the Kanwariya Trek, this trek sees as many as 1,00,000 Shiva devotees carrying holy Ganga water from the headwaters of the Ganges to bathe the Shivling installed in the Baghpat temple.Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), found remnants of settlements dating back 4,000 years in Baghpat. Corresponding to the late Harappan period, this important discovery can be viewed at Baghpat today.The community is mostly agrarian here, and wandering around its colorful market places and city squares is a good way to get a feel of the city and its people.Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of transport within city limits. Mini buses, state-run transport buses and private buses can be used to travel over longer distances. To travel more comfortably, you can hire a private taxi in Baghpat. Women are advised not to wander around alone in Baghpat, even during the day.Cover up at religious places and be careful of your personal belongings.
