We sometimes use the phrase "too good to be true" but our River Tern experience was too good and it was true! The location of course is the highlight with the cottages nestled amidst lush greenery with each cottage overlooking the reservoir lake. I loved sitting in the balcony and gazing out into the endless lake, hearing the soft gurgle of the water, birds chirping and in one instance watch the rain clouds come towards you and then feel the rain drops. It was magical! The food was amazing- less on oiliness yet high on taste with a lot of local delicacies that we loved. Service was exemplary - restaurant, house-keeping, safari staff. Everyone was courteous and always smiling which just adds to the serenity of the place. The boat safari was enjoyable (barring 2 noisy families who treated it as their living room party!). The boat took us near small islands where the river tern migratory birds (2000+) nest. We saw hundreds of eggs and small hatchlings along with the adult birds swarming over the island. The highlight of the boat ride was seeing a majestic wild tusker enjoying his mud bath while a small herd stood a little away guarding two baby elephants. It was a magnificent sight indeed! The jungle safari was an adventure through sudden rain. Lush dense forests and we saw unique crocodile bark trees that we had never seen before. While animal spotting was disappointing (Gaur, Wild Boar, Deers, Monitor Lizard,Sambhar), it was interesting to see the jungle foliage. The resort has two types of abode- log huts which are closer to the "Gol Ghar" or dining space and cottages which are at a relatively higher ground and accessed through an interesting bridge. I had booked the log huts as I am the lazy, unfit types who doesn't like huffing and puffing too much! However, if you are fit and a little adventurous and don't mind climbing 100 odd steps after the bridge about 3-4 times a day, you should try the cottages. They are gorgeous and have a great view - yes I did go to check what I was missing out on :) But fret not, even the log huts have gorgeous views and ours was bang opposite the dining space which worked great for me!

River tern resort is lovely JLR property at the Bhadra dam & is surrounded by dense forest with amazing biodiversity & sighting opportunities. The resort has all necessary amenities, breath-taking views of the backwaters & sighting of birds from the balconies. The jeep & boat safaris arranged by the resort are experiences to be treasured. The food & bonfire at the resort add to the magical experience. Senior citizens need to be mindful of the multiple stairs & climbs to reach farther cottages. Network connectivity & wi fi is extremely poor. Cranky children can affect the experience for parents & other guests on the safaris.

We had a wonderful time at JLR River Tern Lodge, Bhadra. The hospitality was warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home. The jeep safari was a great adventure, but the boat safari stole the show—there's nothing like gliding across calm waters with curious birds and animals popping up for us to say hello. The lodge’s surroundings are truly special, nestled amidst the vast waters of the Bhadra Dam. It’s where nature does all the talking, and you’re just happy to listen. The staff deserves a big shout-out: from the sharp-eyed safari guides and friendly boat navigators to the hardworking housekeeping team, the chef and crew whipping delicious meals, and the always-helpful folks at the reception. Even those working behind the scenes (and behind the trees!) deserve a mention for making everything run smoothly. I’d happily recommend River Tern Lodge to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway with a side of adventure. It’s the perfect mix of calm and excitement—you won’t be disappointed!

The hotel is situated in a very surreal location on the banks of Bhadra dam backwaters. The cottages are on island connected by hanging bridge, very peaceful place. The staff is very courteous and the food quality is very good with a wide variety. Forest safari on jeep and boat is provided, the forest is very dense and scenic - very good place for wildlife enthusiast.
