We have just come back from a month-long trip to India, our fourth in five years...and our biggest regret was that we did not find more hotels as good as The Raintree and that we didn't spend more time in Chennai. Two nights was simply not enough. It never seems fair to single out just one aspect of a hotel or one member of staff, is superb...time after time we saw two or three staff members working as a team with huge smiles on their faces. They were simply getting in with their jobs in a cheerful and particularly when everything is good. And this hotel is very, very good. The 'team spirit' efficient way. The hotel is highrise (12 storeys ??) and whilst it may have been built say 20 years ago, it's been kept in very good order. It felt as if it had been refurbed recently. Certainly our room - on the fifth floor - had all the power sockets, good bedding and 'little luxuries' you would expect of a well-run, modern hotel. Our room even had that great 'extra' - a decent iron and ironing board. Those two 'animals' seem to be endangered species in hotels nowadays. Breakfast was good with a wide range of Western and Indian choices at the buffet. More exotic items (from fried potatoes, to fresh orange juice to waffles) were available from the kitchen, free, via the cheerful team of waiting staff. We checked-in early and, being tired, opted to eat in the ground floor eatery (ie in the level below reception)....fusion cooking in The Eastern style, from Thai to Chinese to Indonesian. Of the four of us, only I had the 'pick and mix' Chinese where you choose vegetables, noodles, rice, meats, prawns etc from say 24 widely differing bowls and have them wok-cooked in any of five sauces, after which your unique recipe is brought to your table. My three companions went a la carte (wide choice) and, though their food was very good, they missed out on the fun. There are two other alternatives for dinner...the first floor has a buffet (ie 30m from reception) and the top floor of the hotel (where the pool is) serves more of a 'candle-lit' menu. As with most large Indian cities, taxis are cheap by European/US standards, making trips too and from the hotel easy. But if you are a newcomer to India, and want to eat or shop away from the hotel (any hotel) consider taking a cab and paying the driver to One last tip, although nothing to do with this cracking hotel...if you want Indian wait for you...for INR300 to 500, drivers will normally wait 90 to 120 minutes and it saves hassle. Last thing, though not related to this hotel. If you want textiles, particularly for the home, go to Sundari Silks, 36 North Usman Rd. We have been to shops like this all over India, Thailand, Singapore etc...Sundari is four floors of pure textile bliss. We bought so much we had to have it freighted back...perfect service. Nice to return to this professional clean hospitable hotel. Great room very clean plenty of drinking water supplied. Good breakfast, romantic rooftop restaurant. Swimming pool . The Raintree is clearly dedicated to delivering exceptional service. My experience was consistently excellent from the airport driver, to the door man, to the front desk, to housekeeping, to the fitness room attendant, and to the very attentive restaurant staff. The hotel is modern and clean. The restaurant's food quality and selection exceeded expectations. Prathama Das from sales management stopped by my dining table to thank me for staying, check on my experience, and ask if there was anything the Raintree could do to improve my stay. The answer is simple, just keep on doing what you are doing.
