Booked for a trip to see the Cricket at Dharamshala. Used booking.com expecting ease of booking and payment, but were surprised when close to our stay the hotel advised they needed a INR 10,000 deposit. Added to this they advised they do not have facilities for taking card payments. Rather than seeking somewhere else at short notice, decided to proceed with a bank transfer, which cost us £25 to arrange with my bank. Later during our stay, we had to find the remainder in cash. Not too easy with India’s less than reliable ATM service! Firstly the positives of our stay: Location is good (though be aware of steep hill to the main drag) Rooms are spacious WiFi was reliable My shower was efficient Food was ok (though better if you ventured out) Negatives: Room and hotel very tired and in need of updating Towels and linen stained and not very clean. I asked them to replace my towels and duvet cover on arrival, which they did but it was still bad. Throughout the stay I had to use one of my T-shirts as a pillowcase! Very noisy with building work next door (not warned about this), additional to this there was a barking dog the other side waking me up in the middle of the night regularly. Told staff about this, but they didn’t seem bothered. Dangerous access to hotel as road was dug up, had to negotiate this hazard throughout the stay. Furniture in room old. Only two coat hangers in wardrobe. Rooms not serviced, had to request new towels and toilet rolls. No room cleaning done during my stay (stayed 9 nights!) An observation from our stay and quite indicative of the attitude of management is refusing a INR 500 note in payment in room service due to a small blemish on the note (this note came from an ATM by the way). I replaced accordingly, but if they paid as much detailed attention to their rooms/cleanliness etc, this hotel will be much better. You get the feeling they were very money driven to the detriment of their guests comfort. Shout out to a member of staff called Dimpletakur who was particularly friendly and helpful. The only stand out member of staff. By UK standards, the price per night was quite cheap, and there is an argument you get what you pay for. But cleanliness, whatever the price, is the least to expect. In summary, I would suggest trying somewhere else, especially for overseas guests. There’s plenty around Mcleodganj to choose from.

Awful hotel. Manager is a scam artist. Booked room for 5 nights and despite it clearly stating that no pre-payment was required, demands for money were made before arrival but this was not actually possible via the means they provided. I sent numerous text messages which were ignored but did receive confirmation that I could pay in arrival. Of course, after an hour in taxi from airport, the manager had sold our rooms and offered to accommodate us in another hotel that was three times the price. We ended up having to stay in a different location and paying triple which has ended up costing me about £200 extra. The manager is a con man, a cowboy and a really unpleasant individual - I would avoid at all costs.

Awesome trip ---- I went to Mcleodganj with family in June 1st week & stayed at Hotel Varuni. The room was spacious, neat & clean. We have got toiletries kits also. All basic amenities were there in the room & washroom. I tried their food also, it was yum & delicious, Quick service, very cooperative staff. Shekhar Lamba (The owner is a very nice person). For my trip i will give 5* ratings. Thank you Hotel Varuni for our comfortable and memorable stay.

Had a great experience during our stay in November. - Room had a beautiful view with plenty of sunlight - Hosts/front-desk and staff were helpful and friendly - Food was good and reasonable - Bonfire night was fun!
