Bidar is not a major tourist destination and it is not going to be unless the city up its game a lot. Which seems unlikely. Indian towns like this off the beaten track do not offer much in terms of accommodation. By this standard, Bidar Gateway does pretty well. The rooms have been recently upgraded (at a budget, mind you), they are quite well sized and the air con works (though it might struggle in the really hot season). The lift work. The hotel has no restaurant, but guests can get breakfast at no charge at the Kamat Hotel, a couple of doors down the road. Hotel Bidar gateway is not immediately obvious from the street. Look carefully and you will see the sign. It would be better if the hotel replied to e-mails.

Nothing went right from the start. The staff at the reception were rude (when young women in our family asked for use of a restroom, they said to wait to check in to our room). The key card did not function and was never replaced. Power fails quite often and the backup generator takes quite a time to kick in which means the elevator does not work in the interim. It makes a difference when your room is on the 4th floor and have senior citizens with you. The runner on the bed was dirty as was one of the towels. The rooms were dusty, bathrooms were missing two slats on the window (which bring in mosquitos), there was no hot water in the shower in the evening, none of the plug points in the room worked. The basement car park is small and messy and we didn't dare park the car there. We brought the room issues to the notice the reception and asked that they be looked into by the time we got back (we were out from about 8am to 6pm). Sadly nothing was attended to. The only cheery point was the staff - a young man, Rahul who doubled up as bell boy and service staff who promptly replaced the dirty towel.

In Bidar, one can't get better than this. Yes, the reception, and the hotel itself, is small. There is no proper signboard outside. There are mosquitos everywhere. There is no in-house restaurant. Parking is slightly a problem. There is only one man who does all work. So, room service is a problem. No minibar, and toiletries are very basic like soap and shampoo only. But the rooms are excellent. Very clean. They asked me to choose a room after seeing them. The family room, which we took, was superb (3500 all inclusive for 3). We stayed for a night. Bed soft. Adequate space. One large and one small bed----perfect. AC cooled well. Two fans( a rarity in a hotel). Nice chairs and work desk. Good cupboards. Small but compact, and clean, bathroom and toilet. Sleep quality was superb for us( 4th floor, room 411) Good lift service and satisfactory ambience. The hotel is in a prime area, and there are en number of restaurants nearby. So, dining isn't an issue Exceptional service from Mr Syed and Mr Devendra. These two are great workers. The hotel is only 2 star, and for that I don't think we can expect better. For family of three or four, go for family room. There is also a triple bed room and suite apart form deluxe room. Also, don't go by the exterior look; looks are deceptive. Go for it in Bidar. Talk to the hotel direct and book. They are helpful. Ask for Mr Syed, manager( 8482222555).
