This review will have two parts, so bear with me until the end and choose your option. a) You have a smartbox and are considering this place: We did have a smartbox, the "three days in Europe". It was supposed to be a two-night stay in a 3 or 4 star hotel around Europe. If you are thinking on this, and have in mind the Eiffel tower and something romantic and luxurious, you should forget it, this is not by any means a 3 or 4 star hotel, it is not really a hotel even. So if your aspiration with that smartbox is something "boutique-style" you should chose something else. b) you like to hike, nature, and enjoy deep Switzerland's spirit Then this place truly is for you. Easily reachable from Geneva, it sets you in an area ideal for hiking and enjoying the mountains. The views of the area are superb, and it is a tranquil, chill place to be. Now if you started in a) but are interested in b) I recommend the place. La Tsalouna is a chalet, in Plans-sur-bex (which is tiny but super calm and beautiful, with a couple of excellent restaurants -especially recommended: l'Argentine-). It is close to many hiking paths and beautiful mountains. It is close to the Jardin Alpin and also to the hot springs of Lavey (which are pretty crowded, and not as nice the ones in e.g. Rigi, and you must bring your own towel, but still worth a visit). It is close to Villars and all the nice things in that area and really has plenty of options around. The best option could anyway still be just chill in the terrace with a book. The place has about 9 rooms, some of them with views (in the terrace), other not. Our room was really tiny, and picturesque. All of the rooms share a common living room which is super nice! full of books, games, a nice space to pass the time (with a wood burning stove). There also is some tea to be made in the living room, which is a nice thing. This common living room is really a nice and pleasant room to be in. On the negative side: the 9 rooms share just 1 toilet (so things can potentially get crowded). There are two shower areas (with two showers each). The place offers towels (1 towel per person, not changed the second day), bathrobes (also 1 per stay), and some showers have soap (bring your own). There is some wifi but it is not strong and does not reach all the rooms (did not reach ours) and the password is not written anywhere (note to owners: put that info in the living room somewhere). Another down point is that it is not super clean, I would say 5/10 in that area, so depending on how much that matters to you it may be a bit inconvenient. So, for the hosts, how to make this place even better? - having a plastic printed sheet with informations in each room (including wifi details and times for breakfast etc) would be great - having a small garbage bin in each room (or a couple of common ones in the corridor) would also be nice - electric outlets are very scarce: maybe add a power strip in the living room? (does not even need to be in the room) millennial visitors would appreciate it. - consider maybe putting away the chair that is in front of the emergency exit. And for the highest possible score: - have a bunch of towels in each shower room and a laundry basket instead of in the room, so people can just pick them and discard them to wash when used could be a great asset here, the shower rooms are big, so it should be possible in terms of size. - maybe use a dehumidifier in the shower and more damp areas, since there is no way out for the moisture if the windows are closed, although maybe in the winter if you have dry heat this won't be a problem. Apart from this, it is a charming place, with a simple and nice breakfast (the honey is really top quality), and the hosts are very nice and super helpful (gave us great tips and things we needed! no complains at all in there, very friendly). So, if you are up for a no-frills chalet weekend, this is a really nice place to go, and the landscapes around are truly amazing. The house itself is marvelous, we really liked it! It still may be the best option you can find in that smartbox!

A lovely surprise in the middle of nowhere

If you want a real "get-away from it" weekend, this is the place to go ... the peace & quiet is unbelievable, it's fantastic !! Lovely hosts, perfectly clean rooms and comfortable beds. We didn't make it up in time to have breakfast but the host kindly offered us a coffee which was both appreciated, and very tasty. There are 3 restaurants in the village, we went to Le Chamois and the food was just amazing, so don't be put off by the remoteness, there is somewhere to go at night. Highly recommended, but you will need a car, don't think there is public transport.

Sweet chalet, great hosts

La Tsalouna is a sweet chalet all decorated in a swiss-alps design. Our room was tiny - just a bed, but the shared bathroom was clean. The hosts are extremely generous, there are lounges on both floors with books and music, couches and apples. Breakfast was nice; when we wanted to find raquettes for our walk that afternoon, they had some to lend. Great value! The only down side, nothing to do with La Tsalouna, was I found Plan-sur-Bex less picturesque than I expected..but our short hike up the mountain in the snow the next day was beautiful. For another recommendation - go to the "farm" bar/ restaurant. They are open all the time (not very swiss of them!) and have cats, dogs, a great local atmosphere and hospitality.

Lieu très accueillant, suiper bien équipé. Chambre familiale avec deux lits simples et des lits à étage. Salon commun avec bibliothèque, jeux, bouilloire et sachets de thé et tisane et cheminée où l'on peut faire son feu de bois. Hôte charmant, petit-déjeuner copieux et délicieux. Pain et tresse et confitures faits maison.

Accueil sympa - avant l'heure officielle d'admission (17h) - dans un chalet somptueux bourré de bibelots, ce qui en fait un décor original. Chambre simple avec lits superposés (pour mon fils et moi) mais propre et relativement spacieuse. Vue imprenable. Douche et WC à l'étage. Propriétaires très accueillants.
