Thai Airways International Public Company Limited is the national carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand. The airline was formed as a joint venture between Thai Airways Company (TAC) and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS).
It was in the year 1960 that flights were inaugurated from Bangkok to 9 overseas destinations, all within Asia. The launch of intercontinental services took place in 1971 to Australia, followed by flights to Europe in 1972, and to North America in 1980.
The airline has received several awards, the most notable ones being the following:
- Best Intercontinental Airline in the Norwegian Grand Travel Award 2012. The airline won this award for the eighth consecutive year.
- TTG Travel Awards 2012 for Best South-East Asian Airline and Best Airline Business Class at the 23rd Annual TTG Travel Awards 2012 Ceremony and Gala Dinner
- Most Outstanding Airlines Full Service International Award 2011 from Travel and Hospitality (TH), an Indian print publication
Connectivity and Fleet Information
With its base in Bangkok, the airline operates regional and intercontinental flights within Thailand and other key destinations across the world. The Thai Airlines’ fleet consists of a variety of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
With the new THAI interactive AVOD system, the aircraft has larger screens and touch-control commands, offering passengers a great choice to select from the latest hit movies, evergreen classics and popular TV programs. Passengers may even learn the basics of a new language and practice meditation with this system.
In terms of in-flight cuisine, Royal First Class passengers departing from Bangkok enjoy an exclusive ‘Chef on Call’ service. You may request special menus in advance on most long-haul flights. Each dish is prepared by a THAI award-winning master chef.
