Sikkim: A Place You Will Never Forget

Hi, I’m Sikkim. I’m just not a place but an experience. Nestled in Northeast India, I have a lot to offer, from the enchanting Himalayas and beautiful rivers to endless pastures, quiet monastery towns, and many more. And I’d love for you to visit me, try my food, meet my people, my rivers and many more. And yes, what you’ve been eating all your life is not really momos. Come here, and I will treat you with some authentic treats!

Go easy on my curves – here are some things to keep in mind before you come to visit me:

1. Plan your trip

The first tip for a great trip would be to plan your trip. I am cold almost throughout the year, so you will have to plan your trip either from April to June, or you can even think of October to December. Summers here are warmer, but you would still need some warm clothes. So, plan your trip as per your climate preference.

Another important aspect of planning your trip is budgeting. An approximate 10-day trip for a couple would cost around INR 90,000. Naturally, this varies from person to person, depending on where you stay and have your meals. An approximate cost for air travel would be around INR 12,000 per person, but this also varies. Budgeting your trip properly will ensure that you thoroughly enjoy your time spent with me.

2. Plan a viable itinerary

Planning an itinerary could be exhausting but essential. And it is equally important to stick to it. In the pursuit of covering all the attractions, we are often left tired and worn out. Make sure that you plan your trip comfortably with enough time to enjoy and relax, so that your vacation is one that you will never forget for the right reasons!

3. Get your Border Permits in advance

My neighbours are Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, and we share borders. All Indian citizens and foreign nationals require a special permit called a Protected Area Permit to visit protected areas. My pro-tip to you would be to get a clear idea of all the permits and get information about the prohibited areas before you travel.

Documents Required for Protected Area Permit

•  Passport size picture of the traveller

•  Photo ID Proof (PAN is not valid)

•  School ID or birth certificate for children below 5 years

•  Aadhaar Card for children above 5 years

4. Carrying Less Cash

We all know that carrying a lot of cash while travelling could be a little dangerous. Instead, I recommend you to use a card instead of carrying a lot of cash which could be misplaced.

5. When In Sikkim

They say if you want to experience a place firsthand, you should immerse yourself in the culture and interact with the people. My people are warm and friendly, and their colourful traditions and dazzling smiles will melt your heart. So, if you’re planning a homestay, then it’s a yes! Along with the scenic beauty and full-of-life monasteries, you will always feel at home here.

If you respect our culture and our landscape, you will always get a lot more in return. You will be delighted by the Sikkimese diversity and the charm, so just try, and you will feel included! I am famous for Buddhist monasteries; if you are willing to know more and learn the ways of Buddhists, I will not disappoint you. Famous monasteries like Rumtek will transport you to a blissful spiritual world.

6. Travelling in Sikkim

Car rentals are not easily available here. If you want to drive a car, be careful of the permits you would require. There is a taxi union here. So, either you can use cabs or get a car arranged by your travel agent for the best experience. Book your transfers, flights, and permits in advance, so you are comfortable throughout the trip.

7. Money Saving Tips

We all love to save a little money when we are travelling. So, here are some tips that you can use to save extra expenses and yet, have the best experience in Sikkim:

  1. Choose homestays, as they are cheaper and cleaner, and you will get to know my people and the beauty of their culture.
  2. You could hire shared cabs or taxis, and you will get to hear about the experiences of fellow travellers too.
  3. Book tickets and permits to the famous Northeastern tourist spots beforehand and confirm your bookings with your agent to avoid any last-minute hassle.

8. Some Places of Sikkim You Can Think About And Choose:
