The South Central Railways was created as the 9th zone of the Indian Railways and came into existence on 2nd October, 1966. It was formed by the merging of the Vijayawada and Hubli divisions of Southern Railway with the Secunderabad and Solapur divisions of Central Railway.
In 1977, the Solapur division was moved back to Central Railway and the Guntakal division was further added to South Central Railways. The newly created Guntur and Nanded divisions were also later added with the Hubli division moved to the newly formed South Western Railway.
The Guntakal division was formed in 1956 as part of the Southern Railway zone, and transferred to South Central Railway on 2nd October 1977. It has the highest amount of route kilometers in South Central Railway amounting to 1307.07 kms.
The Guntur division was created from parts of the Secunderabad, Vijayawada and Guntakal divisions. It has 618.48 route kms and contains 54 stations.
The Vijayawada division is headquartered in Vijayawada that has the privilege of being the largest junction of the Indian Railways.
The Hyderabad division serves the states of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra and has 567.6 route kms. It runs 221 trains per day on an average.
The Nanded division was formed in 1985 and covers parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
The Secunderabad division serves parts of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. It has 1311.06 route kms of track of which 825.33 kms is electrified.
The Guntakal division plays a big part in religious tourism as it contains the famous Lord Sri VenkateswaraSwamy temple at Tirupati as well as other famous pilgrimage destinations like the Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanur and the RaghavendraSwamy Mutt near Mantralayam.
This zone also has a lot of special trains to help tourists during the times of increased travel, including adding coaches to existing trains to increase passenger capacity. The rich natural resources of the area also contribute to bustling goods traffic all through the year.
For the convenience of passengers, South Central Railways provides the Computerized Reservation System at 85 locations. It also has a very well developed passenger enquiry system consisting of Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVRS) for reservation and train related enquiries, National Train Enquiry System (NTES) that can give real time information on movement of trains and Passenger Operated Enquiry Terminals (POET).
The Secunderabad division has also innovatively introduced a Web based Grievance Recording system so that the addressing of grievances can be performed in a much more timely manner.
