Things to do & see in New Delhi
The spoils of many victors make Delhi a drawcard.
Mix four major religions, thousands of years of history and cultural development, significant movements of different populations, invasions and colonialisation and you get one of the most vibrant and profound cultures in the world. This civilisation is evident in the plentiful historical sites around Delhi.
The hungry traveller is well catered for in Delhi, with a variety of restaurants to suit different tastes and pockets. There's everything from delicious snacks of samosas and pakoras to thalis (all-you-can-eat meals) that combine wonderful curries, relishes and tastes to fascinate the palate.
Most Delhi bars double up as both restaurants and nightclubs where young Delhiites drink not just beer and spirits but adventurous cocktails. It's all still quite expensive (one drink can cost more than a night in a budget hotel), but that doesn't stop the bright young things with cash to splash.
Delhi has an abundance of accommodation, though many budget options are seriously rock-bottom basic, while top end are of the credit-card-busting variety. An important tip is to confirm your hotel booking before arrival, and pre-arrange a taxi from the airport. This will prevent all sorts of grief at the hands of touts waiting to pounce on first-time visitors.
You can buy almost anything from anywhere in India in Delhi. Specialities include attar, an essential oil made with flowers and herbs, and zardozi, embroidery made with gold and silver thread. Unless you're in a fixed-priced emporium or an upmarket boutique, bargain hard - it's expected.
