Over the years I have stayed in Brussels many times and tried most of the mid-price hotels. I still love the Colonies. The name is embarrassing, especially if you work

for a global organisation. And the hotel is simple with no luxury touches. Clean, quiet, comfortable. Security now very high, not sure why, with key to get in, make lift go up or down or enter the floor. If you're happy with unpretentious, go for this one.

Ok, first of all let's say I needed a place REALLY a few meters from my destination (I had five intense working days). And yes the hotel was exactly there.

You can't deny it is very well located - a few minutes from the train station (Brussels Nord, so you may reach the airport in less than half an hour), right in one of the business centres of the city, easy connection with the tube. This comes at a price that's in the lower average for the area. Additionally, the wi-fi worked pretty nicely.
However the place is quite poor, except for the hall that still reminds you of the glorious past days. I cannot say I had problems, and overall the room was fine for the few hours I could spend there. Still: there's just one elevator to cover the six-story building (and of course I was on the sixth floor). This means you end up waiting for Godot wenever you need to go up (and walk downstairs, which keeps you fit). When you move from the hall, the rest of the place fails to be equaly classically/romantically decorated (which was likely the idea), leaving you with the feeling it is just a bit poor and decadent. Any step you take there's a door to open with a magnetic card (front entrance, elevator, access to floors, access to room), which is good on the one hand (security) but makes you wonder whether you are locked inside - instead. Quickly measuring it, my room was around 12 square meters (I had booked something that was advertised as 20) - just enough to fit a bed, a small table, a hanger and a closet. The bathroom was so small that I had to pay attention to my feet when closing the door (mandatory, if you wanted to sit on the toilet without having the door edge on your left knee) - but I had my sink, mirror, shower and toilet. Again, all that you need, but quite congested and (again) a bit poor/depressing possibly for the creamy colour chosen for the walls and furniture, and the somehow worn bathroom. Surely the smell of mint deodorant I smashed my face into, each time I was back to my room, didn't help. Finally.... I suggest the management to improve the flushing... You're not supposed to need 2-4 trials to get the job done!
Breakfast is not included, so I took advantage of the bars/cafeterias around the place but one day I was too late and decided to spend 15 Euro on the hotel's buffet. That was really sad experience. I could fit the whole offer on my kitchen table.
Finally, I was happy to stay high enough to be away from the street. Indeed, there is where busses and vans from other major hotels stay to warm the engines. Given the mint smell and the fog I created after a shower, I was happy to open the window and refresh the room. Had I been lower in the building this would surely mean letting exhausted gasses in.
Why is my score "average" instead of "poor"? Because for that price, all of this is the average offer in the area - unfortunately. But I keep searching!

We set to have a short trip to Canterbury, Brussels and Brugge. We spent lovely time in Brussels going sightseeing and enjoying ourselves.
Hotel was very basic, very dated and overpriced.

However, must admit in a good location, not far from city center. Room had no kettle and to make tea or coffee was not an option. Also hotel does not have parking and we had to use public parking nearby £14.50 per day, so booking this hotel add this price to your expenses. Paying £94 per night was far too expensive for the facilities they can offer.
