two days and night on the houseboat turned out to be the best decision in the entire Kerala trip. The houseboat itself was very roomy, very clean and comfortable enough. The transition in/out of boat was very quick and smooth. The hospitality of the staff was unexpectedly generous. They knew when to give us privacy and when to give us information on the area and were extremely polite and warm. We were served us refreshments every so often and the meals were delicious and plentiful. Nothing like waking up to the unlimited backwater skyline with hot idlis waiting for you - or toast and coffee if you prefer. We are a mix of vegetarians and non vegetarians and our needs were met and the staff took care of the food requirement perfectly well. It was the most delicious food we had in Kerala. It was a three room boat with a dining room and an open space and to top it all a roof top for our beer sessions. The bathrooms had good hot water, was nice and clean. The linens were clean. The beds were very comfortable It was the most relaxing time we spent in Kerala.

or service. It was totally worth the money. The staff was very courteous and food was great too. The day begins with check in at 12 noon. After traveling for two hours, the boat is stopped for lunch for two hours. Then it will again sail for couple of hours and stop for the night near rice fields where one can go for a short walk. Spend a very peaceful night and return to base at 9 AM for check out. Lunch, snack, dinner and breakfast are all included in the price. I would suggest that prospective tourists should carry a couple of DVDs of their choice. It would have been helpful if at least one of the three crew could speak English or Hindi.

We were served us refreshments every so often and the meals were delicious and plentiful. Nothing like waking up to the unlimited backwater skyline with hot idlis waiting for you - or toast and coffee if you prefer. We are Jain vegetarians and were concerned about finding food to match our needs but we had emailed the management at Coco ahead of time and they asked us questions in return and took care of the food requirement perfectly well. It was the most delicious food we had in Kerala, my mom remarked. They ask to use less water while on boat in case you run out but really we did not run out, we were a family of 5 and everything was more than enough. The bathroom had good hot water, was nice and clean. The linens were clean. The beds were comfortable enough for one night and the extra bed that we asked for fit nicely in the room. We had a 2 room boat. They provide mosquito nets at night and advise to stay in your room at night - which is a good advice. Stroll on the shoreline at sunset but soon get on the boat and indoors to avoid those insects. It was the most relaxing time we spent in Kerala.

inspect the boat -plus as there was no electricity we couldn't see the rooms or bathrooms properly. When we were able to switch on the lights, we realised what a poor condition the place was in. Broken shower fittings, half a cupboard door, etc. The worst thing was the cleanliness - the boat was absolutely filthy. That night the AC did not work and it was stifling! We could not open the windows as their were no screens and the mossy net for out bed did not fit! THe backwaters are lovely and peaceful but our crew moored up near a busy road bridge and a temple that blasted out music and chanting until 10pm and the started again at 5.15 AM! It was a truly dreadful experience all round.
The only redeeming thing was that we complained the next morning and after some negotiating they agreed to give us another boat for our second day and night. When it turned up later that morning, it was from a different company - Pournami Tours. This boat really was the luxury we had been led to expect, and I cant praise it enough. It clean, well appointed and the staff were wonderful.

our main requirement - AC and houseboat closed with glass to avoid mosquitos and for the safety of a very active toddler travelling with us. The beds were very uncomfortable, small and sheets not so clean. The worst was the bathroom - dirty, smelling very bad and too small. Please ignore the pictures that are provided by the management on the webiste. Your houseboat and your experience will be nothing like that..We had a TV but no setup box and the DVD was not working. They said they couldn't do anything about it. If the DVD player was working it would is advisable to get your own DVD since most DVD are of local language. After a couple of hours, the AC broke down and they parked the houseboat longer than planned to try to fix. After a good 2-3 hrs we were informed that AC wouldn't work in the sitting area were we had planned to spend most of our time watching the view. Since, this was our primary requirement we asked them to return or arrange for a new houseboat which they refused to. We spoke to the manager and after a heated argument he was ready to pay only 3000 back of the total 21k we had spend. He finally decided to return 5k but our day on the houseboat was already ruined by heat and waste of time by being parked most of the time. We had one chef, one captain and a helper with us. The captain didn't say a single word during the whole trip due to language problem and couldn't show or tell us about the area, the locals etc. The only good part was the food prepared by chef. It was simple homely food and good to taste..no complaints on that front. Another thing that worried me was that there was no briefing about the safety and what equipments were available for rescueing or what to do if something happens to your boat. It was more scarier thought since the captain didn't even understand english or hindi. Overall, the experience was not what we were assuming would be with all these issues we were dealing with. The nature and its beauty especially during dusk were spectacular.
